Celebrity matchmaker Sima Taparia, whose exploits are documented in the hit Netflix reality series Indian Matchmaking, spoke about the show’s success, and how it impacted her, as well as the matchmaking business in general. After two popular seasons, Indian Matchmaking returned for a third season on Friday.

Sima dropped by Cyrus Broacha’s podcast, where she spoke about how her journey on the show began, and also addressed speculation that it is rigged and scripted. She said that she isn’t given a single line to say on the show, and that it is ‘total reality’. But Sima didn’t know exactly what Indian Matchmaking would become when it first debuted during the first lockdown in 2020. She said, “On July 17 the show released, and I thought, ‘Chalo hogaya hai, it’s done’, but next day, from July 18, I was getting 5000 phone calls daily.”

Reflecting on her journey as a matchmaker, she said that it hasn’t always been smooth sailing. In fact, there was a point when she almost quit, but her husband Anup encouraged her to not give up. She said, “I started this in 2005. And after that, log aane lage mere paas, kyunki bole jo Sima ji batati hain woh sahi hota hai. Beech mein, ek do baar I was a little bit depressed, I said mujhe band karna hai yeh kaam (People started coming to me, they felt I was an honest person. There was a phase where I decided to quit, I was depressed).” Asked why, she continued, “I thought kahin success nahi ho raha hai, but nothing is in my hand. Jahan likha hota hai wahin it happens, I cannot tell ki sabka match kara dungi (I thought I wasn’t doing a good enough job, but it’s all destiny), it cannot happen. But Anup said, ‘Nahi, nahi, you have all these qualities, you have to continue’. Inke kehne se I again started it.”

Sima’s low success rate, especially on the show, has been pointed out by viewers. She said that she is merely a mediator, and what is written in one’s destiny will happen. She said that after the show, many others thought that the matchmaking business is ‘easy’ and they jumped into it as well. “Many people ko easy lag raha hai, arey hum bhi matchmaker ban jayein, aur ban bhi gaye kaafi log, but it is their personal thing,” she said.

Addressing speculation about the show being rigged, she said, “Nothing, nothing, nothing. Not a single dialogue I have. Just the camera is following, I’m talking to the clients, I’m conversing. We don’t even see if the camera is following. Not a single dialogue is there, whatever is coming, the typical Indian values, as an Indian lady, that’s all. Netflix has not given me a single dialogue. It’s all total reality.”

Indian Matchmaking has aired two seasons already, making many of its participants popular faces on the internet. The third season debuted on April 21.
