Of all the online and watercooler conversations around Aryan Khan’s directorial debut The Ba***ds of Bollywood, the one that’s dominating is about that climactic twist that no one saw coming. These include the cast members involved in that scene, including Lakshya, Sahher Bambba, Mona Singh, and Bobby Deol.
“Can I be very honest? Nobody from the cast knew about that twist,” reveals Sahher in an exclusive interview with SCREEN. “I remember I’d keep asking Aryan what happens in the end: ‘Do I die? Does somebody else die?’ He’d be like, ‘No, I’ll tell you at the right time.’ Day by day, my curiosity was increasing. What’s happening! Someone, please tell me,” she adds.
Aryan chose to break it to the cast only on the day of the shoot. “The shock was also very organic then. I, for one, was still processing it. I couldn’t believe it when he told me. I thought it’s a bit much to digest, but it’s come across really well. People are loving it, so that’s great,” says Sahher.
She points out that Aryan did foreshadow the twist through multiple moments and dialogues peppered throughout the show. The most notable being Bobby’s character of superstar Ajay Talwar bumping into that of Mona, who plays Aasman’s mother in the film, at the success party of her son’s debut film.
But there are also a couple of scenes involving the lead pair — Aasman (Lakshya) and Karishma Talwar (Sahher) — where he asks her to tie him a rakhi. He says it once at the Mumbai airport, and another time after he protects her from the invasive paparazzi outside the fictional office of Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions. “Now, we’re joining the dots, so now we’re getting it,” says Sahher, laughing.
But she gets why Aryan kept the secret to himself. “He was so tight-lipped about it. Also, he didn’t want us to start performing keeping the climax in mind. He wanted the chemistry between Karishma and Aasman to look good, for people to really feel the chemistry. He didn’t want the actors to have any mental block,” she reasons.
Sahher plays Karishma Talwar, a nepo baby, daughter of Bollywood’s top superstar Ajay Talwar. She begins to fall for Aasman, an outsider from Delhi, who’s just made a smashing debut. However, after eloping from their aggressive father throughout the show, they find out his true intentions through that climactic twist in the last episode.
Produced by his parents Shah Rukh Khan and Gauri Khan’s banner Red Chillies Entertainment, The Ba***ds of Bollywood marks Aryan’s directorial debut. It’s co-written by him, Bilal Siddiqi, and Manav Chauhan. The show, streaming on Netflix India, also stars Raghav Juyal, Manoj Pahwa, Anya Singh, Gautami Kapoor, Johar, Rajat Bedi, Manish Chaudhari, and Arshad Warsi among others.
