The highly anticipated Squid Game 2 released on Netflix in December last year. Here's why the Lee Jung-jae starrer wasn't up to the mark.

Squid Game 2 was a huge disappointment for several fans. After witnessing Seoung Gi-hun’s traumatic journey in season one, there were high expectations from the second part to deliver the same level of intrigue and thrill. However, the makers missed the mark. The much-anticipated second season, which released on December 26, 2024, has left many with questions about loopholes and speculations about the promises regarding season 3.

Here are five reasons why I thought Squid Game 2 was a game not worth playing:

1. Less games, less fun

Even though Seoung Gi-hun decided to go in again to play the games, it wasn’t as interesting as compared to the first season. Even if we keep the comparison apart, the number of games in the episodes was less, resulting in reduced survival adrenaline and fun. Moreover, the games weren’t designed with a social background in mind, which made them interesting previously. There was also an over-extended buildup between the games.

2. Front man’s accessibility

There was a lot of hype created around the antagonist, Front Man. His identity being kept under wraps was one of the most thrilling parts of Squid Game. However, making him join the game, which led to no good during the climax, was a major disappointment. His true self was better unexplored. In fact, even the introduction of Front Man felt underwhelming and vague.

3. Poor character development

Season two also suffered due to poor character development. The arcs and backgrounds of several characters were left incomplete. In addition, there wasn’t any depth to their stories and personal life. It reduced the relatability, which made the impact of the second season very short-lived.

4. The boat crew subplot

The subplot, involving the boat crew, could have been a significant addition to the story, raising stakes for the entire narrative. The makers missed out on an important opportunity which could have been a turning point for Squid Game 2. After a while, the whole crew looked aimless.

5. Lackluster climax

The last ray of hope that any Squid Game fan had was from its climax. However, the death of Gi-hun’s best friend, coupled with his tearful reaction, left many unsatisfied.

With season 3 of Squid Game already confirmed, let’s see if these loopholes are addressed or if we are in for more disappointment. The fans don’t have to wait too much as it is set to release on June 27 this year.
