Sujeeth’s much-awaited and long-delayed Telugu action thriller They Call Him OG, starring Pawan Kalyan in the titular role, finally hit the cinemas today. It also marks Emraan Hashmi’s menacing turn as the chief antagonist. The craze for the film has been so immense that Pawan Kalyan fans couldn’t help but chant “OG!” even at his political events which he attended in the capacity of Deputy Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh.

They Call Him OG has already earned Rs 7.8 crore through Wednesday previews at the India box office. However, its total advance booking so far adds up to Rs 65 crore, out of which Rs 23 crore is from the paid previews alone. This marks a career high for Pawan Kalyan, beating the record held by his period action adventure film Hari Hara Veera Mallu: Part 1, directed by Krish Jagarlamudi, which collected Rs 15 crore from paid previews alone.

Additionally, as per industry tracker Sacnilk, They Call Him OG has also minted Rs 33 crore in advance booking, including paid previews, internationally. This makes its worldwide advance booking equal to Rs 98 crore. Given this momentum, the film is likely to comfortably cross Rs 100 crore on its opening day worldwide and even reach the Rs 150 crore mark. This would make it not only Kalyan’s biggest opening so far, but also one of the biggest worldwide openings for a Telugu film.

They Call Him OG doesn’t have much competition in the Telugu market in the near future, except the Telugu dubbed version of Rishab Shetty’s Kannada mythological action film Kantara: Chapter 1. A prequel to the pan-India blockbuster Kantara, the film is slated to release in cinemas on October 2 on the occasion of Dussehra and Gandhi Jayanti.

Written and directed by Sujeeth, the film also stars Arjun Das, Priyanka Arul Mohan, Sriya Reddy and Prakash Raj in prominent roles. It’s set in a volatile 1990s Mumbai, which is engulfed in gang wars, leading to violence and chaos in the city. At the centre lies Emraan Hashmi’s character Omi Bhau, who is on the wanted list of the police and appears to be the main culprit for the rising violence in the city.

Pawan Kalyan plays gangster Ojas Gambheera aka OG, who holds the power to curb the unhinged violence in the city. He returns to the turf after 10 years of disappearance to challenge Omi Bhau. In the trailer, the actor is seen swinging a samurai sword, his ultimate weapon, to slit throats and limbs of the goons. He’s also seen firing an automatic rifle in a hotel, unleashing his action avatar yet again.
