Thaman addresses lukewarm reception to music of Ram Charan’s Game Changer: ‘None of the songs had…’
Thaman opened up about why the songs of Ram Charan-Shankar's Game Changer didn't get enough reach.

Gone are the days when a composer had to just think of delivering hit music that would regale audience in theatres, sell cassettes or compact discs, and stand the test of time. Now, things are different, and it is important for songs to also have a virality on social media. Music director S Thaman is no stranger to this as he has made his name as one of the most successful composers in India, especially with the reach of his songs on social media. But this understanding is a double-edged sword because it can orchestrate the way a song is composed, and in a recent interview, Thaman opened up about how he deals with songs not becoming ‘viral’ especially his recent album, Game Changer.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, “You see, the songs of Game Changer were completed in 2021, and I had to keep the songs updated whenever it is released. Imagine holding on to tunes for years together. That’s when I realised how the collaborations between Shankar and AR Rahman were made thinking of the day of release. For Game Changer, I reprogrammed the whole album, used new singers, etc…”
Despite all this, the songs of Game Changer didn’t achieve the virality of S Thaman’s other numbers from films like Ala Vaikunthapurramulo and Guntur Kaaram. Accepting the fact that there was a dip in the numbers, Thaman pointed out that there was an important reason to it. “None of the songs had a hook step that could be recreated. You see, getting a 25 million view count or a 50 million view count is easy for composers of a particular stature. After that, reels come into play, and that is where Game Changer failed,” said Thaman, who shared how songs like “Butta Bomma” and “Tum Tum” became popular thanks to many making dance reels.
Thaman also opened up about how he does the leg work required to understand what works with the audience of today. “I have a rather young team, and I bounce my music off them. In fact, despite being a teetotaler, I go to pubs at times to listen to the kind of music that engages the young crowd. At times, I play my songs to my son, who is also quite the discerning audience.”
S Thaman, who recently delivered a blockbuster album with Nandamuri Balakrishna‘s Daaku Maharaaj, is also composing for top-tier projects like Pawan Kalyan’s OG, Prabhas’ Raja Saab, Balayya’s Akhanda 2, and the Atharvaa-starrer, Idhayam Murali, which also marks the composer’s return to his acting career.
