Angry Shark Tank India pitcher tells Anupam Mittal to stop making ‘befaltu excuses’ if he doesn’t want to invest, advises Peyush Bansal
Shark Tank India season 4: Pitcher Gauri Varma wasn't too happy with how Anupam Mittal and Peyush Bansal spoke to her on the first episode of the new season.

The fourth season of the reality show Shark Tank India began with some dramatic new pitches. The first episode saw entrepreneur Gauri Varma from Delhi pitch her confectionary brand, Confect, to the panel of ‘sharks’, which included Peyush Bansal, Anupam Mittal, Namita Thapar, Vineeta Singh and Aman Gupta. Gauri asked for Rs 1 crore in exchange of 1% equity, putting the valuation of her brand at Rs 100 crore. The pitch ended in an argument between Anupam and Namita, who were divided over Gauri’s honesty.
Gauri said that she first got the idea to enter the cakes business after eloping with her husband and getting married in Las Vegas. She said that they spent Rs 36,000 on their wedding cake, which turned out to be an eyesore. Over the next few years, she learned everything that she could about food technology, and started creating fondants and sprinkles. She expanded her business further, and her range of products eventually grew to 800. “This is a big mistake, by the way,” said Peyush, advising Gauri to focus on perfecting fondants before spreading herself too thin. Gauri didn’t seem to appreciate the feedback.
Anupam, on the other hand, was struck by something she said in the pitch. Gauri had admitted that she begins to feel restless every few years, after which she develops an itch to start something new. Anupam said that it is her ‘fitrat (nature)’ to get restless, and this makes him uneasy about betting on her. His biggest point of contention was Gauri’s decision to abandon her business in India and pivot to the United States. She said that in just 18 months, her US sales have hit Rs 8.5 crore, and that she intends to branch out in new countries with a round of investment.
Aman was also uncertain. He said that she quickly moved away from the Indian market at the first sign of trouble. “Where will you run away to when you sense trouble in the US?” he asked. Because Gauri was so keen to focus on the US market, Namita said that she would make her an offer on the condition that she balance her business, and devote equal attention to India. She offered Gauri Rs 1 crore for 2% equity, and asked for royalty until she makes her Rs 1 crore back. Despite her initial valuation being halved, Gauri gladly accepted the offer.
Anupam was stunned. He pointed out how easily she flipped on everything that she had said in her pitch. But Namita defended her, and said that she needn’t pay attention to him, especially since she had cracked a deal. “Your superpower has a dark side that doesn’t let you learn from failures, and that can hold you back,” Vineeta told Gauri as she left. In her post-pitch piece-to-camera, Gauri didn’t seem pleased with how she was treated, especially by Peyush and Anupam. “Ab ho rahi hai na FOMO?” she said about Anupam. “Felt like telling Peyush he should sell just one design at Lenskart,” she said. “They don’t understand the first thing about cakes, befaltu ke excuses mat do,” she added, noting that the ‘sharks’ should’ve simply said that they are not interested in making a deal, instead of giving her worthless advice.
