People were throwing stones at Balaji office when Mihir died, fans tore up my clothes: Amar Upadhyay

Amar Upadhyay recalled how playing Mihir Virani left him with torn clothes in Agra.

Amar Upadhyay, who is still known by the masses for playing Mihir Virani on Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, recently recalled an incident when a mob of people tore up his clothes as they got too excited to find Mihir among themselves. Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi was the most popular television serial of the time and had become a phenomenon soon after it aired. Amar recalled that while the craze went to another level after his character died on the show, but even before that, he found it hard to control the crowd.

In a chat with Siddharth Kannan, Amar recalled that before Mihir’s death on the show, he had once visited Taj Mahal with his family. This happened when the show had just been on air for six months and he had not gauged his popularity by then. “I went on a Friday and I didn’t know that there was free entry for all Indians that day. I reached in the evening and there were lakhs of people there. Someone spotted me and within seconds, everyone knew that Mihir is here,” he shared.

Amar Upadhyay shared that the crowd swallowed him and carried him to another corner and he was separated from his family. “I was separated from my family. The crowd picked me up and I was a kilometer away from my family. The security had to come in,” he recalled. Amar said that by the time he came out, his “clothes were torn up” and he did not even get to see Taj Mahal.

Amar recalled another incident from the height of his fame that happened after Mihir died on Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. Amar shared that 25 ladies gathered outside the office of Balaji Telefilms and threw stones at the building because they were so upset with Mihir’s death. “25 ladies were outside the office of Balaji and were throwing stones at the building. They were breaking the window glass and questioning, ‘Why did you kill him? Who told you to kill him?’ We all were like, ‘Yes, it worked,'” he shared.

The actor said that Mihir has overshadowed everything he has done in his life and said that while he was in the middle of all this euphoria, he could not believe that he was at the receiving end of all this love.
