Kuch Reet Jagat Aisi Hai producer JD Majethia on why he chose Gujarati culture to showcase dowry issue: ‘If we show a family in any other culture, fingers would be pointed at us’

At a time when television content is being criticized, shows coming from JD Majethia’s Hats Off Productions are finding many takers. Be it a Pushpa Impossible or a Waghle Ki Duniya, Majethia makes sure his stories head in the right direction always. He has now taken on another relevant topic, dowry, in his latest show Kuch Reet Jagat Ki Aisi Hai. The show went on air on Sony Television on February 19 and has been receiving positive reviews. With another nice head start for a show, Indianexpress.com sat down for a conversation with the show’s producer JD Majethia, and discussed the show’s subject, the caution it needs to be dealt with, and a lot more.

Talking about Hats Off making sure to churn out relevant content always, JD said, “It is always a conscious effort. We got known with Khichdi and Sarabhai, but we started with theatre. Because of that, we used to tell stories that had an impact, along with humor. Once we came to TV, we narrowed it down to just comedy, so people don’t know that we also have a very strong bank of dramatic stories. Baa Bahoo Aur Baby was one show that had a huge impact, it touched a real-life fabric, and we are doing that now with Waghle Ki Duniya. We cannot make shows worth Rs 2000-3000 crores, our story needs to be relatable. Even in a Sarabhai, while we saw an elite society, we also saw a Monisha who was middle-class.”

Kuch Reet Jagat Ki Aisi Hai stars Meera Deosthale and Zaan Khan in the lead roles. On his latest show, Majethia said, “This tradition of dowry continues under cover even today, and it is not just in small towns and cities, but in big ones too. Even the wealthiest of people have this going on. People like us also play a role in encouraging social evils like this.” Sharing an incident, JD added, “I moved into a bigger house a few days back, and my daughter told us a year ago that she is moving out to her independent house. She just does not want to be a protected child, and I appreciate that. I learned from my daughter. I felt I needed to start something like this (Kuch Reet Jagat Ki Aisi Hai) to impact lives.”

When asked why specifically he chose the Gujarati culture to showcase this issue, JD shared, “We have studied this subject a lot before making the show. Even though it revolves around a Gujarati family, in reality, Gujarat has a very low percentage of dowry deaths. So we thought about what would the Gujarati community think. We wanted to make a pan-India show since the issue is very prevalent in the country, so there was no particular reason behind choosing a family with Gujarati culture. If we show a family in any other culture, fingers would be pointed at us.”

He added, “We want to address the issue of dowry deaths and crimes related to the same that are only increasing. This ideology of getting dowry for your son is so conservative, due to this, people don’t educate their daughters. This issue is spread across states and is atrocious. People just want sons because if they get a daughter they have to give dowry, which leads to female infanticide.”

Jamnadas aka JD Majethia also revealed that Kuch Reet Jagat Aisi Hai is inspired by a Gujarati novel written by Dhirbuen Patel. He acquired the rights for the same in 2010 and planned to make the show earlier. To make the show even better, JD also brought writers of Balika Vadhu on board.
