On Thursday, Kaun Banega Crorepati 15 saw Jasnil Kumar become the second contestant of the season to win Rs 1 crore in prize money. The store manager from the small town of Anwak in Azamgarh, UP, had been trying to get on to the Amitabh Bachchan-hosted show for a while. In an interview with indianexpress.com, Jasnil shared that he always aimed at winning big and creating history. While he’d been preparing for years, he also said that Amitabh’s jacket proved to be a lucky charm for him.

“When I was on the hot seat, I was initially a little nervous but as I started giving the right answers, I got confident. For years, I have dreamt of this day where my name is announced as the crorepati. I have visualised this scene in my head so many times. Honestly, I also prepared well to ensure that I win big and hence I was confident. It has been a long journey for me to reach there, and it is almost like a tapasya for me,” Jasnil Kumar shared. The crorepati said that to prepare for the show, he would spend two hours every morning reading newspapers, and then head out for work. After a long day, he would spend time with family, and after they went to sleep, he would study online.

Many contestants often claim that they want to be on KBC to meet Big B, and once they are in front of him, their preparation goes out of the window. However, for Jasnil Kumar, meeting Amitabh Bachchan was a bonus but never the primary goal. He said, “Of course, he’s the superstar we have all grown up watching and meeting him was a matter of honour. However, given I was confident about my knowledge, I was not nervous around him. He too was so kind and I think that helped me be more confident. Of course, I wanted to meet Amitji, but my goal was to win the competition.”

‘Amit ji’s kindness added positivity’

During the shoot, as Jasnil Kumar was feeling cold because of the studio’s strong air conditioning, Amitabh Bachchan called for his personal jacket and gifted it to him. Jasnil considered this Amitabh’s blessing, and said that the jacket was a lucky charm for him. “It was like a magical thing for me and it brought me luck. After he gifted it to me, I felt so positive and could reach my goal. As for sir, I will never forget his kindness and humility. He hugged me after the game and said ‘well done’. It was a once in a lifetime memory.”

Jasnil said on the show that he wants to build a house for his family with his winnings. He told us how he would like to save a sum for his children’s future and education. Given how some contestants in the past have squandered their earnings, Jasnil Kumar said he knows his limits and also his personality. Calling himself a ‘simple man’, the winner said that while it’s a big day for him, nothing really changes at the core. “Of course, we will be able to use this for a better future and also improve our lifestyle. But I remain the same and so does my family. I am not a celebrity and I will ensure that I be the way I am.”

Before Jasnil Kumar, Jaskaran Singh won Rs 1 crore on Kaun Banega Crorepati 15. The game show airs on Sony TV.
