(Photo: Charu Asopa/Instagram) Charu Asopa, who has primarily worked in television soaps, recently opened up on being on the set of the popular TV show Mahadev “for two days straight, without any break.” Charu said that she would be so exhausted that it would lead to a “meltdown.” But as Charu shared her tale, she also added that she had no complaints about it.
She told Hindustan Times, “When I joined the industry 10 years back, I was 24. And back then, I was shooting for the show Mahadev. I remember how our schedule would sometimes go on for two days straight, without any break. There were days when I would be so exhausted that it would lead to a meltdown.” Charu added that she would even “sleep on the set when extremely tired.” She said, “Kyuki agar humaara ek bhi scene hota tha, aur wo bhi agar raat ko shoot karna hai, tab bhi hume subh 8 baje se set par bulaa liya jaata tha (Because even if we had one scene, and if that scene would be scheduled to be shot at night, we would be called at 8 am).”
Charu said that things are much better now in the television industry and added, “You aren’t called until and unless everything for your shot is set up. Things have become much sorted now.” She said that even though actors these days aren’t shooting for days at a stretch, they are “emotionally and mentally weaker.”
“Ab toh zyada se zyada ek ya do hours hi extend karte hain. (Now they hardly extend the shoot for one or two hours). But now when I look back, I think I never heard of any such incidents where people committed suicide because of work pressure. Then what stress are these 20-21 year old dealing with that they end up taking their own lives because of the pressure. This is very heart breaking and shocking,” she said.
In 2019, actor Ankita Lokhande had mentioned that she once worked on the set of Pavitra Rishta for 148 hours continuously, which is a little over six days. Earlier this year, actor Radhika Madan too had opened up about working for days at a stretch on the set of her TV show Meri Aashiqui Tumse Hi. After Radhika called out the work culture in the television industry, many actors opposed her stance and said that due to the number of episodes that are required out of the crew, such hours are unavoidable.
