Thangalaan box office collection Day 3: The Vikram-starrer holds its own amidst competition, earns almost Rs 24 crore

With Thangalaan recovering from the 68 per cent dip on Day 2, it would be interesting to see if the film has actually nipped the trend, and will have an even better Sunday

Thangalaan box office collection Day 3: Pa Ranjith’s long-awaited Thangalaan hit the screens on Independence day, and has been hailed as a film that features a stellar Vikram in one of his best-ever roles. While there have been mixed reviews regarding the execution of the film, Thangalaan has delivered a potent message about the rampant exploitation in the Kolar Gold Fields. Although the film opened to Rs 13.3 crore at the domestic box-office, Thangalaan saw a sharp decline on Day 2, amassing just Rs 4.22 crore. According to Sacnilk, the prospects of Day 3 seemed better as the film gradually recovered to earn Rs 5.75 crore on the first Saturday of its run. The total nett domestic collection stands at Rs 23.8 crore.

With Thangalaan recovering from the 68 per cent dip on Day 2, it would be interesting to see if the film has actually nipped the trend, and will have an even better Sunday. The film is facing stiff competition from Demonte Colony 2, which released alongside Thangalaan on August 15. The Arulnithi film, helmed by Cobra director Ajay Gnanamuthu, opened to Rs 3.55 crore on Day 1, and had a slight dip to Rs 2.35 crore on Day 2, only to almost go toe-to-toe with Thangalaan on Day 3 with Rs 4.3 crore.

Thangalaan, which also stars Parvathy, Daniel Caltagirone, Pasupathy, and Malavika Mohanan, had 38.55 per cent occupancy on Saturday, and it was just a shade higher than the Telugu occupancy of 35.48 per cent. This points at the promotion overdrive by Thangalaan in the Telugu states actually bearing fruit, and it is also helped by the abysmal run of the other two releases — Double iSmart and Mr Bachchan. In fact, the two direct Telugu films could only collect around the Rs 1 crore mark on Saturday, which is similar to the dubbed version of Thangalaan.
