At the recently conducted audio launch of Suriya’s Kanguva, directors Karthik Subbaraj and RJ Balaji were the special guests. They are the filmmakers who are helming Suriya 44 and Suriya 45, respectively. These projects mark their first collaboration with actor Suriya, who is currently on a signing spree. RJ Balaji, known for his refreshing candour, minced no words in responding to Bose Venkat’s suggestion that Suriya should join politics. “Politics isn’t just about elections. If we are socially conscious, and even help move a fallen tree from the road, we are into politics. Through his philanthropy, especially in the field of education, Suriya sir is already a politician. He has already sowed the seeds of social consciousness. Stick to that kind of politics, Suriya sir. You don’t have to join electoral politics,” said Balaji.

The multi-hyphenate talent also fondly reminisced about his time as an emcee, and now, to take the stage as the director of Suriya’s next. “I am honoured to direct Suriya sir. Recently, the assistant directors of a really big Tamil filmmaker asked me why Suriya sir selected me despite the names doing the rounds to direct him next. I just smiled. But thank you, Suriya sir, for the trust. And I am cooking a terrific mass film that will hit the screens next year.”

Balaji also pointed out that Suriya’s humility in the promotions for Kanguva isn’t easy to pull off unless it comes naturally. However, he asserted that Suriya was a huge superstar with an enviable body of work. “Suriya sir says he’s not like Prabhas or Rana in terms of physicality. Honestly, you don’t have to be all of them. I understand that such a statement can come only from someone who is very confident about the self. For me, you are bigger than everybody else.”

Echoing Balaji’s thoughts, Karthik Subbaraj, who recently wrapped up the shooting of Suriya 44, said, “Apart from his love of cinema, he strived to choose scripts that would elevate the bar in cinema. Kanguva is important for Tamil cinema.” Explaining how the success of Kanguva would open a lot of doors for Tamil filmmakers, Karthik said, “It is an inspiring journey for every filmmaker. When we want to make a film like Gladiator or Troy, we limit ourselves even in the thinking process due to various constraints. Kanguva will help break it.”

Calling Suriya one of the greatest actors in Indian cinema right now, Karthik added that he has immense respect for the actor. “He never took his stardom or fans for granted. He loves his fans so much, and always took up challenges that would elevate his body of work. His words that I became a brother for life was a very emotional moment for me.”
