One of the more conscientious stars in Indian cinema today, Suriya has often used the social consciousness of his real-life persona in the characters of his films too. It was best seen in his 2021 film, Jai Bhim, which was helmed by Vettaiyan director TJ Gnanavel. “Movies can make magic happen,” said Suriya, who was in Hyderabad for the promotions of Kanguva.

Elaborating on the real-life social impact of his films, Suriya said, “In Varanasi, I met a District Magistrate, who saw Kaakha Kaakha (2003), and decided to become an IPS officer. When Jai Bhim released, it resulted in the government giving 3 lakh people their voter IDs, community certificate and pattas for their houses. Good movies can change people’s lives.”

You know, films like Braveheart 300 and Apocalypto, we always thought when we’d get to do such films in India. Now, thanks to SS Rajamouli garu, those gates have opened, and we have been able to achieve something like Kanguva.”
