Almost six years back, director C Premkumar made one of the most memorable directorial debuts with 96. In a few days’ time, his sophomore Tamil film Meiyazhagan is set to hit the screens, and the makers on Monday released a trailer to kindle the imagination and enthusiasm of the audience.

Meiyazhagan is headlined by Karthi and Arvind Swami, and the trailer reveals that it is going to be a roller-coaster of an emotional ride between these two characters. While Karthi is a fun-loving guy from the village, Arvind Swami plays an urban man with a huge baggage on his shoulders and heart. He is returning to his village after years, and is received by his vibrant brother-in-law who is completely at home in the village.

The rekindling of the bond that seemingly begins at a wedding goes through different stages like anger, grief, regret, realisation, and hopefully, peace. It is this relationship that seems to have been explored in Meiyazhagan, which also stars Sri Divya, Devadarshini, and Rajkiran. As we are gradually pulled into the world created by Premkumar, and acquainting ourselves with the instantly likeable characters, Kamal Haasan’s soulful singing acts as a reminder that it isn’t just going to be all fun, but a deeply profound experience a la 96.
