Madonne Ashwin is back with another political film, Maaveeran. After winning the National Award for Best Debutant Director last year for Mandela, the director has come up with an intriguing film, starring Sivakarthikeyan in the lead role.

In Maaveeran, Sivakarthikeyan plays the role of a cartoonist in a local Tamil newspaper–a coward weary of violence. However, situations force him to go up against a corrupt politician, played by director-actor Mysskin. However, there’s more to this frightened cartoonist than what meets the eye. Whenever he is put in a spot, he looks up at the sky as if someone is guiding him out of the situation. Like the director’s previous film, Maaveeran also promises to be a comedy-drama despite dealing with some serious themes.

Here’s the trailer:

Veteran actor Saritha, who has been missing from action for the past decade, is back in Maaveeran playing the role of Siva’s mother. Ace director Shankar’s daughter, Aditi Shankar, who made her debut with Karhi’s Viruman, plays the newspaper editor in the film, which also has Yogi Babu, Sunil, and Monisha Blessy in prominent roles. Composer Bharath Shankar, who worked in Mandela, is teaming up with Madonne Ashwin again.

Sun Pictures is bankrolling Maaveeran, which will be released on July 14. The Telugu version of the film is called Maaveeradu, which will release on the same day as the Tamil movie.

Last year was a mixed bag for Sivakarthikeyan, who churned out a blockbuster film, Don. However, his second release, Prince, turned out to be a disaster. Fans are hoping he will make a comeback with Maaveeran and reclaim his position as the most bankable star of Tamil cinema.
