Tamil superstar Kamal Haasan has had an illustrious career, wearing many hats—actor, director, screenwriter and choreographer. Despite his versatility, he has never featured in a web series. In a recent interview with SCREEN, the actor-filmmaker, currently gearing up for his next film Thug Life, revealed that he once attempted to create a series but had to halt production as he “would have spent all the money” on just one episode.

When asked if he will ever make a web series, Haasan replied, “If we want to, we can. That’s a choice, which is a luxury. Some of the big Hollywood guys saw going into television as a downfall. But now, big stars are looking forward because they get the liberty that the corporate structure won’t give them. The episodic format also gives a better chance to develop the character and play it for longer.”

Kamal Haasan also shared that he had once acquired a story, but the series was halted just as filming was about to begin. “I have given it a thought. In those days, I even started making one. I approached a great writer and we bought his story. It’s called Agrahara Devathaigal by Sujatha,” Haasan revealed.

He continued, “I wanted to make it as a series. We almost started, but then I was using the same techniques as cinema and with one episode, I would have spent all the money there. We stopped!”

Kamal Haasan’s upcoming film Thug Life, directed by Mani Ratnam, is set to hit the big screen on June 5. It also stars Silambarasan, Trisha, Ashok Selvan, Joju George, Nasser, Abhirami, and Aishwarya Lekshmi, with a musical score by AR Rahman.
