Enjoy Enjaami controversy: Santhosh Narayanan says AR Rahman was also victim in Maajja fiasco

Ever since Santhosh Narayanan accused Maajja of not paying them for Enjoy Enjaami, people online were criticising AR Rahman for not supporting the artistes. Now, Santhosh has claimed even Rahman was a victim.

On Tuesday, Tamil music composer Santhosh Narayanan took to social media to share a post on the occasion of three years of “Enjoy Enjaami”. While fans expected a celebratory post from the composer, it turned out to be a scathing accusation against Maajja, the indie label, which produced the song. Santhosh claimed the label hasn’t paid a single penny to him, rapper Arivu, and singer Dhee, the three main artistes of the song. He also claimed despite the involvement of several renowned musicians, the label has betrayed them. People online were quick to assume that Santhosh was hinting at AR Rahman. Several X (formerly Twitter) users criticized Rahman. However, Santhosh, in a new tweet, has cleared the air and claimed Rahman was also a victim in the ‘Maajja fiasco’.

Earlier, in the video, Santhosh claimed that despite “Enjoy Enjaami” garnering about a billion streams across platforms, Maajja, which promised them the ownership of the song, hasn’t paid a single penny. “I wanted to spill the beans on how much we have received in net income and revenue. To date, all three artistes (Dhee, Arivu, and Santhosh Narayanan), we received a whopping zero cents from this song. Unfortunately, we tried our best to reach out to the label. There were some great, world-renowned artistes involved in this. We are yet to receive any of the revenue,” he said.

His statement led to people criticizing AR Rahman as it was assumed that the Academy Award winner, who was one of the faces of the indie label, didn’t help the artistes.

In his latest tweet, Santhosh Narayanan has shut such criticism and wrote Rahman was always been a pillar of support to indie artistes.

Santhosh Narayanan wrote, “My dearest @arrahman sir has always been a pillar of support without any expectations through the entire Maajja fiasco and he is also a victim of many false promises and malice. Thank you, Sir. Many indie artists including Arivu, Svdp, Dhee, and many others including myself have also never remitted our revenues in any form and have been bullied with emails. I understand that emotions are high and would urge you all to support the indie artists at this juncture.”

He also wrote about Pa Ranjith and Arivu, who have stopped collaborating with him after a controversy surrounding “Enjoy Enjaami”. He wrote, “I will definitely triple-click on the entire episode with my mentor @beemji and rapper @Arivubeing in the coming days and as many of you know, I wish the best for them with love and want to make sure all indie artists get their fare dues met soon. Here we come.”

Earlier, when Rolling Stone India did a cover story with Dhee, Pa Ranjith claimed that Arivu was ‘invisibilized’ and wasn’t given due credit for the song. While Arivu claimed the song was based on his grandmother, Santhosh Narayanan also claimed rights over it. Since then the composer, who was a frequent collaborator of Pa Ranjith, stopped working with him. Now, with Santhosh’s new tweet, there’s hope that the two will collaborate once again.
