Director Ashwath Marimuthu promises to bring back vintage Silambarasan TR in AGS Productions’ STR 49
The first look poster of Silambarasan-Ashwath Marimuthu's next has made all the right noises on social media, as the hype for the film has already reached feverish proportions

In the early 2000s, the symbol of youthful rebellion in Tamil cinema was today’s rather sober ATMAN Silambarasan, who was once the Little/Young Super star Simbu. High on entertainment, and receiving flak for its brash nonchalance, Silambarasan TR’s films were a subgenre in Tamil cinema. Be it Manmadhan, Vallavan, Dum, and even Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya, Simbu-isms took over any film he was part of. But then, over the years, especially since his physical transformation, Silambarasan mellowed down. Of course, his pizazz was still intact, but it almost felt like he moved past the antics that made him the favourite of the youth. Now, Oh my Kadavule director Ashwath Marimuthu, who will be helming Silambarasan TR’s next, tentatively titled STR 49, has promised to bring back the vintage STR.
Ashwath, who is currently helming Pradeep Ranganathan’s Dragon, backed by AGS Entertainment, is reuniting with the banner for STR 49. In a buildup to this announcement, Silambarasan had posted, “Dum + Manmadhan + Vallavan + Vtv in Gen Z mode = NAMBA NEXT !!!” and “Dei 2k kids , 90’s mood la nalaiku sharp ah 6.06 pm ku varen.”
Here’s the post

In the announcement poster, we indeed see the mid 2000s Silambarasan coming to the fore, including his famed hand gestures, and it promises to be a riot. In fact, Ashwath Marimuthu listed out the various tools he used to bring back the vintage STR. Titled “Announcement photo of STR: Things that define him”, the props included a star, heart/broken heart, the ‘Corrected Machi’ symbol, black rope around wrist, cycle chain, blade, metal rings, scarf around one hand, musical notation tattoos, green ring (tease of the film), and the white shirt and blue faded jeans he wore in the song “Manmadhane” from the movie, Manmadhan.

The first look poster includes all these props, and has made all the right noises on social media, as the hype for the film has already reached feverish proportions. While there have been no official confirmation about the cast and crew, it would be interesting to see if Ashwath ropes in his usual composer Leon James for the project, which just might be his long-awaited entry into the big league.

Apart from this film, Silambarasan is also part of Mani Ratnam’s Thug Life, which is headlined by Kamal Haasan. He was also supposed to star in Kamal Haasan’s home production, STR 48, directed by Desingh Periasamy, but there has been no update on that front.
