Chinmayi calls out Kamal Haasan for selective outrage: ‘How does one trust politicians who speak for women’s safety while they ignore harassment right under their noses?’
Kamal Haasan recently tweeted in support of wrestlers who are protesting against the government for its inaction in the sexual harassment case against BJP MP Brij Bhushan Singh

Singer Chinmayi Sripaada has called out Kamal Haasan after the latter tweeted in support of Indian wrestlers, who are protesting against the government for its inaction in the sexual harassment case against BJP MP Brij Bhushan Singh. Sharing Kamal’s tweet, Chinmayi asked why he has not been talking about the harassment that’s happening right under his nose. The singer was pointing out the sexual harassment complaints made against lyricist Vairamuthu.
On May 23, the actor had tweeted, “Today marks 1 month of protests by athletes of the wrestling fraternity. Instead of fighting for national glory, we have forced them to fight for personal safety. Fellow Indians, who deserves our attention, our national sporting icons or a politician with an extensive criminal history? (sic).” Kamal is one of the few popular celebrities who have come out in support of the wrestlers.
On Thursday, Chinmayi re-shared Kamal Haasan’s tweet along with a scathing criticism of the actor for his selective outrage. Chinmayi asked why the actor-filmmaker has been silent about the numerous accusations made against Vairamuthu. She wrote, “5 years of a singer in Tamilnadu being banned for naming a molester right in front of their eyes and not a pip about it since the poettu has their respect. How does one trust politicians who speak for women’s safety while they ignore harassment right under their noses? Just. Asking. Now while my timeline will blow up with abuse, shouting and yelling imma gonna exit. Buhbye! (sic)”
After the singer’s tweet, her timeline got filled with criticisms and accusations from fans of Kamal Haasan and supporters of his political party Makkal Needhi Maiam. “What kind of negative mindset is this?… You didn’t speak for me so you shouldn’t be speaking for them. The right mindset is: I got affected and I will ensure nobody undergoes the pain I had to undergo and not I didn’t get support so nobody should get as well,” commented one user.
Another Kamal fan wrote, “I never seen you asking this question to any other actors or politicians (who have power) till now? If our leader voices out for women’s safety, now, you are awake and question him which is sad. Does any leader have guts like Kamal sir and how many voices you have heard on this issue? (sic)”
Reacting to the numerous comments, Chinmayi shared another long post pointing out how all political party members are behaving in the same way when one of their own is accused of sexual harassment. She wrote, “Mr Kamal Haasans supporters that have been furious at me and are saying ‘OH I SUPPORTED YOUUUUU’ may kindly control their tongue. You didn’t do me or anyone else a favour. You did the right thing. Neither is any leader, leave alone yours, is above a legitimate question (sic).”
In 2018, Chinmayi Sripaada accused lyricist Vairamuthu of sexual harassment. As part of the #MeToo movement, the singer called out Vairamuthu and shared the accounts of many such women who have suffered at the hands of the lyricist. Over the years, Chinmayi has been constantly questioning the film industry and its stalwarts for not standing up to Vairamuthu and continuing to be associated with him.
