If you grew up in the 90s in a Tamil household, you would have been fascinated by the climax scene in Rajinikanth‘s commercial potboiler Manithan. For the showdown with the enemies, the actor is heavily armed. The iconic aspect of the whole costume is all those perfectly round grenades that dangle from his suit. As a blast from the past, Aruna Guhan, partner and creative director of AVM Productions, shared a video of the costume from the AVM museum.

Sharing the clip, Aruna wrote, “Step into our costume closet with me as I show you costumes from some of the biggest and most memorable @avmproductions movies. We are back with another trip into our Costume Closet, a special one worn by Superstar @rajinikanth himself, in Manithan for the climax fight.”

Manithan, a Diwali release, competed against Mani Ratnam-Kamal Haasan’s Nayakan. Though Nayakan is considered to be a classic of Tamil cinema now, back in 1987, Manithan ended up as a commercially successful film. SP Muthuraman, a frequent collaborator with Rajinikanth, directed Manithan which had Rupini, Raghuvaran, Srividya and Jai Ganesh in pivotal roles. Chandrabose composed the music for the film. Th movie was re-released in 2016 for Rajinikanth’s birthday along with many other hits of ‘Superstar’ from the 80s.

Rajinikanth is currently working on his 170th film, which is directed by TJ Gnanavel. The movie also stars Amitabh Bachchan, Fahadh Faasil, and Rana Daggubati. Post the film, Rajinikanth is teaming up with Lokesh Kanagaraj.
