There’s no exaggeration in saying that we are currently living in the Anirudh Ravichander era as almost every major film features him as the composer. In 2023 alone, both of his movies — Nelson’s Rajinikanth-starrer Jailer and Atlee’s Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Jawan — have emerged as two of the biggest successes ever witnessed in India.
Anirduh already has some big titles in the pipeline, including Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Thalapathy Vijay-starrer Leo, S Shankar’s Kamal Haasan-starrer Indian 2, Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Tyson and both upcoming Rajinikanth films helmed by TJ Gnanavel and Kanagaraj.
Meanwhile, the composer recently opened up about his relationship with Thalaivar, who is also his uncle, and how he separates the personal from the professional.
During a chat with Film Companion, Anirudh Ravichander was asked if the familial bond ever gets in the way of creation. Anirudh stated, “I think we are able to separate personal and professional relationships. Regarding Jailer, initially, there was only one song in the film, as per the script. However, when we watched the rough edit, we felt that there was room for another song, which turned out to be Hukum. We realized we could place this in the flashback when he enters as a cop and when he arrives, in the present time, at the villain’s den.”
“Normally, you would just go for background music in that scene. But we felt that we could turn it into a song because of the word, Hukum. So, we inserted it there, and it worked. We also placed it in the climax, where Shivarajkumar, Mohanlal, and Rajinikanth appear. So, we definitely separate the professional and the personal. There’s obviously extra love, but from Day 1, we have tried to keep them separate, regardless of the scale of the film. It doesn’t matter who is involved; we have to do our job right,” he added.
After beginning his career as a composer in Aishwarya Rajinikanth’s Dhanush, Shruti Haasan-starrer 3, Anirudh worked on a Rajinikanth film for the first time in Karthik Subbaraj’s Petta (2019). He worked with Thalaivar again in AR Murugadoss’ Darbar (2020).
