The unexceptional battle
With quite a few drawbacks and an uncanny resemblance to Nintendo's Pokémon, Outplay Entertainment’s Monsters Legacy is a strictly average affair, although the content isn’t all that bad
Monster’s Legacy
While fans of Nintendo’s Pokémon wait for the popular game to make its debut on iOS, one can’t help but notice a rise in the number of clones that pop up on the App store almost every week. Outplay Entertainment’s newest, free adventure title, Monster Legacy, joins the same club. But it falls short from being called an addictive game.
After selecting your character and naming it, the gamer starts off by exploring the world of Arborea as a keeper, who are special people infused with elemental energy (whatever that means, as there is no explanation provided in the game). Maybe, it is this energy that qualified them to train monsters.
As the gamer, you set off on the adventure with a bag of gold coins and a cute little magic wand, as you come across a guide named Tyro, who introduces you to professor Nobu. The professor then guides you, giving suggestions about buying a monster from the shop, in order to get ready for the battle. Some quick shopping from the store and 8,000 coins later, you become the proud owner of a fire monkey (aka Primon, whose name can be changed). In the first battle, Nobu helps the gamer out with hints and tips. It is here, that you are introduced to the attacks. Each monster has four attack types: Physical (can be used freely), Magical (extremely powerful, but takes away a lot from your magic bar), Stats (boosts your stats and lowers your opponent’s) and Super (fire attack). The elemental matchup system is simple, as each monster is representative of only one elemental type (which includes fire, water, earth and air).
Coming to the good points. The graphics of the game are pretty good and the characters are well designed. Some monsters look adorable, especially the little ones and their evolutions become increasingly fierce and exciting. Kudos to the makers for giving us a visually appealing presentation. But unfortunately, the drawbacks overpower the advantages here. After a battle, you can heal your monsters through different ways, but they are either expensive or time consuming. The gamer can always level up and give their monster some time to heal, but that might just leave the gamer feeling exasperated. A level one monster takes about three hours to fully heal. Otherwise, gems are your other way out. But, be ready to empty your wallets, as they can only be bought through in-app purchase. There are healing items that can be purchased from the shop using coins, but again, they are so expensive that spending real money is the only way out. The music sounds outdated and tends to get repetitive, ultimately failing to keep you hooked on. The controls are confusing, as sometimes, your monsters end up not performing an attack at all. There are times when a single tap for an attack is just not enough, since the controls fail miserably. That’s quite a frustrating thing for an hardcore gamer.
Monsters Legacy had everything going for it, especially a decent content and perfectly animated graphics, but overall, it just fails to make a mark in the adventure space, that already has quite a few known games dominating the scene.
