Best Production Design
Wasiq Khan (Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-leela)
Taking away the award for Best Production Design for Goliyon Ki Rasleela Ram-leela, Wasiq Khan’s tryst with the world of cinema began as a backdrop painter with art director Ratnakar Phadke. He later got a job as a production assistant for the Tamil period drama, Iruvar (1997), which was directed by Mani Ratnam and Hari-Bhari (2000) directed by Shyam Benegal. Art director Samir Chanda, who was the catalysing factor in Khan’s cinematic journey, recommended him to Anurag Kashyap in 1999 and Khan worked on his first independent project Last Train To Mahakali, a television short series for Star Bestsellers series on Star Plus. Khan later on worked on several of Kashyap’s films, notable among them being Black Friday (2004), That Girl in Yellow Boots (2010) and Gangs of Wasseypur (2012), which won the Screen Awards for Best Ensemble Cast and Best Action.
“It’s a very good feeling to win an award, especially Screen, because of its reputation. For the past few years, I’ve always been nominated, but this is the first time I’m winning, and the first time is always very special.
This year too, I honestly, had no expectation of winning, but it came as a big surprise.” — Wasiq Khan
Best Choreography
Remo D’Souza Badtameez dil (Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani)
Ace choreographer and director, Remo D’Souza walked away with this year’s Best Choreography award for Badtameez dil in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani—a first in a career spanning almost a decade. Although his forte lies in choreography, D’Souza ventured into direction with F.A.L.T.U. in 2011, but tasted success with the film based on dance, ABCD AnyBody Can Dance last year. Juggling his passion for choreography and direction, D’Souza has his hands full working on the sequel to ABCD besides several assignments as a choreographer in films. He shot to fame as the judge on the dance reality show Dance India Dance.
Some of his notable films as a choreographer have been Krrish3, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Kal Ho Na Ho, Singh Is Kinng. As an actor, he was seen in Any Body Can Dance, Ranvir, Meenaxi:A Tale of Three Cities and Sonam.
“It feels great that after working in the industry for so many years, this recognition finally comes your way especially for a song like Badtameez dil. Lifting the trophy was an emotional moment for me as years back, I was one of the 50 dancers who had helped in pulling the huge cloth off to unveil the Screen trophy during an act. And here I am, holding the trophy that I have earned. Thank you, Screen.” — Remo D’Souza
