Despite being in theatres for over two weeks, the Diwali weekend proved fruitful for the film, registering a 47% jump in collections. On Day 16, Kantara: Chapter 1 earned Rs 8.5 crore, its lowest single-day figure so far, but bounced back with Rs 12.5 crore on Saturday, according to industry tracker Sacnilk. With this, the film’s domestic net collection stands at Rs 506.25 crore, while its worldwide total has crossed Rs 717.50 crore.
On Day 17, the film, a prequel to Rishab Shetty’s 2022 hit Kantara, recorded an overall 43.13% occupancy in theatres for its Kannada version. Despite crossing Rs 700 crore at the worldwide box office, Kantara: Chapter 1 still trails behind several major blockbusters, including Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal (Rs 915 crore), Laxman Utekar’s Chhaava (Rs 807 crore), and Atlee’s Jawan (Rs 1,160 crore). However, it is close to surpassing Aamir Khan’s PK, which earned Rs 792 crore globally. Speaking about the success of Kantara 2, Rishab Shetty earlier said, “We began the world of Kantara from the first film and since then we have explored the dynamic between nature and humans. This story is rooted in our folklore from coastal Karnataka, we want to talk about the tribes, the folklore and deity worship in our film.”
He added, “Since then I have had a thought that regional can also be universal. This time with this success, that point has once again been proven that our film is being accepted globally.”
Directed and written by Rishab Shetty and produced by Hombale Films, Kantara Chapter 1 also features Rukmini Vasanth, Gulshan Devaiah, and Jayaram in important roles. The film hit the big screen on October 2 in multiple languages.
