Renowned for his exceptional vocal range, Sonu Nigam has gifted Indian cinema with numerous memorable tracks, including “Kal Ho Naa Ho”, “Suraj Hua Maddham”, “You are my Soniya”, “Abhi Mujh Mein Kahin”, “Shukran Allah” and “Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna”, among others. Known for his ability to captivate audiences both through his recorded songs and live performances, Nigam recently experienced an emotional moment during a concert in Bengaluru. Overcome with feelings following a powerful rendition, the playback singer-composer was moved to tears, while the audience, equally emotional, responded with thunderous applause.

A video of the performance, which has since gone viral on social media, shows Nigam singing “Mere Dholna 3.0” from Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 (2024). Towards the end, he becomes visibly emotional and tears up. He later revealed that the song was not part of his planned setlist and that he performed it without prior rehearsal. In a selfie video shared on Instagram, Nigam admitted that the performance had left him “emotionally, physically and mentally drained.” He reflected, “After performing, I realised that sometimes, even if a person doesn’t sing well, an energy might build up and such an atmosphere is created that people connect to it, and they too end up crying.”

Mentioning that this was the first time he performed “Mere Dholna” on stage, Nigam added, “I hadn’t planned to sing it; I hadn’t even rehearsed it. But when the atmosphere became so emotional, I was in tears. After singing ‘Bijuria’, I wondered whether I should take the chance or not. But I did.”

Itna roya hu main stage par main. Mera bas chalta toh main rok deta, lekin agar main gaana rokta toh log sochte ki humein chidaa ke gaana nahi gaaya (I cried so much on stage; I’ve never cried like that before. If I could have, I would have stopped, but if I had stopped, people would have thought that I was just teasing them by not singing),” he said. Nigam also admitted that simply hearing “Mere Dholna” and “Abhi Mujh Mein Kahin” brings him to tears.

Aisa main rota tha jab mummy ka dehaant hua tha 2013 mein, 28th February ko. Abhi 12 saal ho jayenge 4 din mein. Tab 3-4 saal jab main ‘Kya Hua Tera Waada’ stage par gaata tha aur main phoot-phoot ke rota tha. Ab thoda kam hua hai itne saalon ke baad. (I used to cry like this when my mom passed away in 2013, on February 28th. It’ll be 12 years in 4 days. For 3-4 years, when I used to sing “Kya Hua Tera Waada” on stage, I would cry uncontrollably. Over the years, it has become a bit less),” he explained, before concluding the video by expressing gratitude for the love and support of his fans, while also asking for their understanding in case of any mistakes on his part
