Azealia Banks, the American rapper, songwriter and award winning artist, known for her controversial social media tirades against fellow musicians and colleagues, recently made transphobic comments about Korean pop star BLACKPINK’s Lisa, just days after her Met Gala appearance. While this is not the first time Banks has targeted the Money crooner online, fans believe Lisa is receiving unnecessary hate, and the frequent attacks are now getting out of control. Banks commented on Lisa’s outfit and physical appearance, claiming she looks like a “ladyboy.”

Lisa, the popular Thai K-pop star, attended the annual haute couture fundraising festival on May 6 in New York alongside her fellow bandmates Jennie and Rosé, marking their first time walking together on the prestigious red carpet. For the night, Lisa wore a black Louis Vuitton outfit by designer Henry Taylor. She paired it with a bodysuit, a blazer, and transparent stockings, and sealed her look with pearls, while her hair was styled in an updo. The look became one of the most viral of the night, partly due to the controversy surrounding an alleged embroidery of Rosa Parks’ face on her dress (Rosa Parks being one of the most famous figures in the American civil rights movement).

Banks decided to comment on a viral photo of Lisa from the event. On X (formerly Twitter), she said, “I’m sorry but this is giving Ladyboy,” a term often used in Southeast Asia to refer to transgender women. She pointed out physical features that she believed made Lisa look like a man, even going as far as to outright call her “a man.” She continued, “It’s giving Adam’s apple and a not-so-taut tuck,” adding, “I’m not walking that comment back.”

For fans, there was no issue with being called trans or with the word “trans” itself. However, they believed Banks’ comment pointed to a broader issue of transphobia, where people’s gender identities are not respected, and their appearance is used as a way to question or undermine their gender. Fans took to social media to call out her behaviour. One user pointed out, “Why are you so jealous?” Another said, “She definitely suffers from an inferiority complex.” A third added, “She is problematic; let’s not give her attention.”

This isn’t the first time Banks has targeted the White Lotus star. Back in March, when asked about Lisa’s album Alter Ego, Banks made a dismissive comment, saying, “I don’t listen to K-pop.” Banks also expressed disdain for K-pop artists in general, calling them “garbage.” She said, “These k-pop artists are largely making crappy facsimile urban Americana hip-hop music? Do they not understand that the influence begins and ends with Black America lmao?” In April, she again criticised her Coachella set, accusing the performance of relying too much on production elements and stating that the singer lacks originality and vocal prowess. Banks’ continued offensive remarks about Lisa and the K-pop industry have led many to accuse her of being racist and xenophobic.
