Diljit Dosanjh and Will Smith do the bhangra in unexpected collaboration, watch video
Diljit Dosanjh made Will Smith match his bhangra steps in their latest Instagram reel, which comes days after the latter releasing his new album Based On A True Story.

Diljit Dosanjh has had quite a list of collaborators, the most recent being Ed Sheeran. The British pop star joined Diljit on stage at the former’s Mumbai concert and at the latter’s Dil-Luminati concert in Birmingham last year. Diljit even made Ed croon a few lines in Hindi, from his 2021 single “Lover”. Diljit has found a new collaborator now, not for a stage performance, but for an Instagram reel. It’s Hollywood star Will Smith.
The duo jointly shared a reel on Sunday morning, in which Will shows a picture of Diljit in his smartphone, before revealing the Punjabi superstar to be standing next to him in person. They then perform bhangra steps as Will matches beats with Diljit. The duo even shake hands and hug at the end of the reel. The caption read, “PANJABI aa gaye oye (face with sunglasses emoji) with one & only living legend @willsmith (crown, Indian and US flag emojis). It’s inspiring to watch king Will Smith doing Bhangra & enjoying Panjabi dhol beat (smile emoji).”
The collaboration comes a couple of days after Will Smith released his new music album, Based on a True Story. He even addressed the controversial slap he gave comedian Chris Rock during the 94th Academy Awards ceremony in his new album. The actor grabbed the headlines during the Oscars 2022 telecast after he slapped Chris during his presentation, which included a joke about Will’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. When the actor returned to his seat, he shouted: “Keep my wife’s name out of your mouth!” Later on in the show, Will returned to the stage to accept the Oscar for best actor for his performance in the film King Richard.
In the track “Int. Barbershop — Day” from his latest album, the actor-singer shed light on the Oscars controversy with lyrics, “Him and Jada both crazy girl, what you talkin’ bout?/ You better keep his wife’s name out of your mouth.”
The song included several other lines that directly referenced his infamous Chris Rock slap at the 94th Academy Awards ceremony. One of the lyrics of the song was, “I heard he won the Oscar but he had to give it back/ And you know they only made him do that because he’s Black.” However, Will did not have to return his Oscar — the Academy instead banned him from attending any event related to the organisation for 10 years. The actor-singer also resigned his Academy membership and issued an apology, saying that he was “deeply remorseful” for his actions.
Based on a True Story marks Will Smith’s first full-length solo music project in 20 years, with his last release being 2005’s Lost and Found. Meanwhile, Diljit Dosanjh recently wrapped shooting for the UK schedule of his Punjabi film Sardaar Ji 3. Slated to have a worldwide release on June 27, the film is a third part of the Punjabi horror comedy franchise Sardaar Ji. The previous two installments released in 2015 and 2016, respectively.
