Good Fortune movie review: A tepid tale

Good Fortune movie review: Aziz Ansari returns as writer-director with an impressive line-up in Good Fortune. It hardly gets better than having Keanu Reeves play an inept angel called Gabriel, who is seeking to not just do “good” on Earth (basically saving people texting and driving) but do “deeper” and “better” deeds, so as to climb up the celestial rung and get himself “bigger wings” – “It matters”.

Sadly, Ansari doesn’t make enough of this good fortune. With the basic story plot of a man down on his luck (Anj, played by Ansari) and a tech mogul whose luck just won’t run out (Jeff, played by Seth Rogen) trading lives, thanks to the meddling of Gabriel, Good Fortune goes round and round in circles without saying much that is new.

Ansari’s deadpan humour means you will be chuckling at a lot of places, but nothing is uproariously funny or particularly moving. It gives a glimpse though of the bleakness of the gig economy, where lives can feel like hamsters on an endless wheel, and the blindness of the tech economy, where execs take self-help lessons on empathy and spend afternoons scampering between sauna and ice baths, because they can.

That God, even if it is via his demoted angel Gabriel, experiences this first hand is sweet irony.

The twist is that Gabriel innocently believes that the “artificiality” of Jeff’s life will be clear to Anj once he has lived it for a week. Only, Anj doesn’t want to switch back, because money may not solve all problems, “but, it turns out, it does solve a lot of problems”.

However, if you are a Reeves fan – and, it turns out, there are a lot of them – you may want to drop in. For the joy of watching him enjoy a burger, a chicken “nuggie”, a milkshake for the first time (he has been deprived of those human joys as an angel).

And, if that is not your thing, just to see him lean back against a wall in an apron and grey beard, his salt-and-pepper hair in a pony, having his first few deep drags.
