Anyone But You movie review: Glen Powell, Sydney Sweeney film lands on the thin dividing line between love and indifference.

Anyone But You movie reviewAnyone But You movie review: it is not smart, not funny.

It’s never as easy as ‘boy meets girl’, which is why of the many rom-coms attempted on screen, only a few manage to crack that intangible spark. Anyone But You comes amidst much hype, studio push, two good-looking stars and lots of bare skin. Leaving nothing to chance, it also throws in a destination wedding as backdrop, sun, sand and beach as the stage, a loving extended family as Cupids, and lots of gorgeous food to dress up the scenery. Plus Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing as apparently inspiration.

Eventually, though, everything considered, it must still come down to ‘boy meets girl’. And when this boy Ben (Powell) meets this girl Bea (Sweeney), not a single sinew of the bodies on display show any fire.

A bland, ticking-all-boxes kind of romedy, it is not smart, not funny, not appealing and almost desperate in its attempts to be some of the above. Powell has at least a twinkle in his eyes that promises a charm. Sweeney is a complete misfit, and as she protests about trying to figure out her life, including whether she wants to go through with a law degree, she comes across as simply confused, not charmingly so.

There are several reasonable people waiting around with their hearts on offer for these two lovebirds to make up their minds. And Fraser’s Margaret, charismatic without even trying, is among those who deserves better.

Love and hate is a thin dividing line — the well-known truism is the fallback line for two characters in the film as they try to figure out Ben and Bea. Where Anyone But You lands, though, is on the thin dividing line between love and indifference.

You are not even drawn enough into it to hate.
