When Mani Ratnam was stunned by Mammootty treating Pranav Mohanlal as his own son: ‘He picked up a stick and chased him away’
Mohanlal and Mammootty have worked together in over 50 films to date and share not only a professional relationship but also a close personal bond.

Two of the biggest superstars Malayalam cinema has ever seen, Mohanlal and Mammootty have worked together in over 50 films to date. Now, after 16 years, the iconic duo is reuniting for a highly ambitious project directed by Mahesh Narayanan. Tentatively titled MMMN, the film also boasts an impressive ensemble cast, including Kunchacko Boban, Fahadh Faasil and Nayanthara, making it one of the most anticipated Indian films in recent times and its production is currently underway.
The two legends share not only a professional relationship but also a close personal bond and Mohanlal affectionately refers to Mammootty as “Ichakka,” a nickname used by Mammootty’s own siblings. Recently, actor and filmmaker Suhasini Maniratnam, who has worked with both stars and shares a warm friendship with them, recounted an adorable story about the Big Ms’ camaraderie, which also involved their families. She noted that the incident even surprised her husband, renowned filmmaker Mani Ratnam.
“Mani once went to Mammootty’s house (then in Chennai) to narrate a story. While they were talking, a boy came near them and Mammootty picked up a stick and chased him away. When Mani asked who it was, Mammootty replied, ‘It’s Pranav, Mohanlal’s son.’ Mani was shocked to see Mammootty treating Pranav like his own son,” Suhasini shared during an interview with Mohanlal on Galatta Tamil.
Mohanlal and Mammootty first collaborated in director PK Joseph’s Oothikachiya Ponnu (1981), where they both played supporting roles. Over the years, they have shared screen space in several iconic films, including Padayottam, Athirathram, Adiyozhukkukal, Avidathepole Ivideyum, Anubandham, Karimpinpoovinakkare, Harikrishnans, Narasimham and Twenty:20.
