Tovino Thomas says his remuneration is determined by film’s scale: ‘Adrishya Jalakangal won’t be an industry blockbuster’

Mentioning that though he believes he doesn’t have what it takes to be a producer, Tovino said that he joined the film in that capacity to collaborate with a group of talented people. He further emphasised he knew from the outset that Adrishya Jalakangal wouldn’t be the type of film to become an industry blockbuster or generate a Rs 100 crore revenue.

“Therefore, it wouldn’t be fair for me to demand the usual remuneration I charge for other films. I mostly decide my remuneration based on a film’s scale. When we discussed what could be done instead, the team proposed including my name as one of the producers. I was happy with that. This was the case with Kala (2021) as well. I opted not to charge a salary for acting and instead treated that amount as my investment in the film,” Tovino explained during a press conference in Kochi as part of the promotion for Adrishya Jalakangal.

“For me, satisfaction holds greater value than money when doing films,” he asserted, adding, “I entered the film industry with the dream of making a small appearance. To have received numerous roles since then is like a bonus. Each film serves as a valuable learning experience for me.”

“Adrishya Jalakangal is an anti-war film with a layered structure and surrealistic treatment and is set in an imaginary space. The script is strongly socially driven and touches on many different aspects and elements of society related to the notion of war,” Dr Biju told Variety last year.

Adrishya Jalakangal recently premiered at the Tallinn Black Nights International Film Festival in the competition category. The film also stars Nimisha Sajayan and Indrans in key roles.

The film’s cinematography was handled by Yedhu Radhakrishnan, while its editing was carried out by Davis Manuel. Ricky Kej has composed both the songs and the original score for the movie. Dileep Daz, Pattanam Sha, and Aravind Kr led the production design, makeup, and costume departments, respectively.
