Priyamani on working with Mohanlal in Neru: ‘I was a bit intimidated because…’

Actor Priyamani admits to being nervous while working with acclaimed filmmaker Mani Ratnam in Raavan and Malayalam star Mohanlal in Grand Master and Neru.

PriyamaniPriyamani's Maidaan will hit screens on March 10.

Priyamani is currently in the news for her latest release Maidaan, starring Ajay Devgn in the lead role. The National Award-winning actor, who is on a good streak with back-to-back hits, recently opened up about working with Mani Ratnam in Raavan and Mohanlal in Grand Master and Neru. Priyamani, who is considered to be one of the best performers down South, admitted that even she was nervous while working with the two stalwarts of the film industry.

Priyamani narrated how she landed a role Mani Ratnam’s Raavan. She said, “I think we both met at a film festival. He told me, ‘I saw Paruthiveeran. You come and meet me.’ The next thing I know, I am getting a call from Madras Talkies. Who will say no to that? I took a flight to Chennai and met him at his office. He told me I am basically making Ramayan, and I want you to play Surpanaka in it. At that point in time, he told me only Aishwarya Rai had been confirmed for the film. I then knew I was part of the Hindi version as well.”

The actor continued, “All of us were so alert when Mani Sir walked in. We were like school kids. But Mani Sir made us feel comfortable. The first thing he told me is this, ‘I want to see how the character reacts. I don’t want to see how Priyamani reacts.’ So, I did whatever I could. I still remember the scene where Vennila is gang raped, and the brother comes in and asks what happened. That scene we shot in one take. First, we shot it in Tamil. I had exhausted all my tears, and when he asked if I could do one last take, I asked if I could use glycerine as I had lost all my tears. Later, when he met my mom, he said, ‘Does she a have tap or something? Once she opens, it flows. She is really good. Very good scene.'”

“I was happy with the way I performed. And I really hope that if Mani Sir is watching this, he calls me again for a film. I want to work with him again,” she added.

Priyamani also opened up about her experience of working with Mohanlal in Grandmaster and Neru. She said, “I was a bit intimidated because I have grown up watching Mohanlal Sir.” When asked if Mohanlal improvises on sets, Priyamani said, “Yes. But you will not know if you don’t pay close attention to it. It could be just moving his eyes or adjusting his dress or some slightest thing, but that brings a lot of difference to that particular character. So, I was happy to work with him again.”
