Malayalam actor Parvathy Thiruvothu, in a panel discussion by Netflix and the National Commission For Women, said she is tired of getting boxed as the feminist and the bold one.
“Can you please allow me to be all of me?… Boxing is one of the most rampant stereotypes we face every day,” Parvathy said. The actor also revealed that she has been called a hard person to work with all her career. She narrated an incident where she was called the same for asking for a comfortable costume (police uniform) instead of a tight one.
While talking about the problems she endured for questioning people in power, Parvathy said, “I have been called a difficult person to work with all my career.” She added, “I recently finished shooting for my first Telugu project called Dhootha and it is helmed by Vikram Kumar. I had the opportunity to have a long conversation about the tightest police uniform that Supriya (a fellow panellist) mentioned.”
“Oh my god! The shock in the faces of the costume department! But I can’t breathe. How much spanx can I wear? Like I need to eat lunch. But no, it had to be…(gestures shape of the curvy body). If not for anything, I need to say my dialogue and I need lungs for that. So, at least that much you could give. I insisted and I was a very difficult person on set for that. So, like Supriya said manage your expectations…but at the same time put up a fight. This is your right to be in the industry. It is as much as yours as it is theirs. So to keep it ours, we have to keep the people responsible, answerable, and accountable.” she said.
Ahead of Parvathy, Supriya Yarlagadda, Telugu actor and producer, spoke about how actors who play women police officers are given tight and body-fitting uniforms to feed the male gaze.
Dhootha is a Telugu web series, which also has Naga Chaitanya in the lead role. The official synopsis of the Amazon Prime Video Original reads, “In this supernatural horror, possessed inanimate objects wreak havoc on the lives of people who commit deadly sins.” Priya Bhavani Shankar and Prachi Desai are also part of the project.
