The findings of the Justice Hema Committee and the numerous sexual misconduct allegations that emerged against several male insiders since the panel report’s release recently have finally led to the collapse of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA) as its office bearers submitted mass resignation on Tuesday.

While Malayalam superstar Mohanlal stepped down as president of the association, all members of the executive committee have also submitted their joint resignations.

“AMMA has decided to disperse the executive committee on moral grounds in the light of allegations made by some actors against some of the committee members. A new committee will be formed after an election within two months,” the statement issued by the association said, the media house reported further.

Those who resigned include AMMA’s vice presidents Jayan Cherthala and Jagadish, joint secretary Baburaj, treasurer Unni Mukundan, and executive committee members Ansiba Hassan, Sarayu Mohan, Vinu Mohan, Tini Tom, Ananya, Suresh Krishna, Kalabhavan Shajohn, Suraj Venjaramoodu, Jomol, Joy Mathew, and Tovino Thomas.

Senior actor Siddique had resigned on Sunday as the general secretary of AMMA, a day after a fellow prominent actor alleged that she was raped by him at a young age. The mass resignation follows that. Besides Siddique, actors Baburaj and Mukesh were also called out by survivors for allegedly harassing them.

On Monday, actor Prithviraj Sukumaran criticised the association for its inadequate handling of the survivors’ complaints. His comments were in response to a question about AMMA’s inaction regarding a complaint by his Avan Chandiyude Makan co-star Sridevika against director Thulasidas. He asserted, “Stronger intervention and actions are needed from AMMA.”
