Dulquer Salmaan-starrer King of Kotha was released in theatres on Thursday, and on its opening day, the film made Rs 7.7 crore at the box office, as per industry tracker Sacnilk. The film was released across multiple languages, but Kerala remains a stronghold, delivering 53.65% occupancy on day one, and Kochi witnessing the highest occupancy rate at 67%. For a pan-Indian release, King of Kotha’s numbers are rather underwhelming.

Before King of Kotha, Dulquer was last seen in R Balki’s Chup: Revenge of the Artist, in which he played a serial killer. The film was a failure at the box office as it only made Rs 11.6 crore in its lifetime run in India. However, his last big hit was the Telugu film Sita Ramam, which turned out to be a pan-Indian success. After the film became a nationwide hit, it was released in multiple languages. Sita Ramam, which also starred Mrunal Thakur, made Rs 77.28 crore gross in India.

Directed by Abhilash Joshiy, King of Kotha has DQ in a never-seen-before avatar as a gangster. The film also stars Aishwarya Lekshmi, Shabeer Kallarakkal, Prasanna, Gokul Suresh. Dulquer has hinted that they could make a sequel of the film. He said at an event in Kochi, “If you (audiences) end up cherishing the film to that extent and embrace it wholeheartedly, we will certainly contemplate a sequel.”

In an earlier interview, Dulquer had revealed that they reshot the climax of the film as it “warranted something even bigger.” He told Bollywood Hungama, “Yes, we did reshoot the climax of King of Kotha, but it’s not because there’s anything problematic. I think when you watch the film in one continuous flow, it warranted something even bigger.”

Indianexpress.com’s Anandu Suresh called the film a “skillfully-crafted gangster film which fails to offer a gripping narrative.” A part of the review read, “Though the Dulquer Salmaan-starrer possessed the potential to be celebrated alongside iconic gangster movies like Satya, Vada Chennai, and Gangs of Wasseypur, its failure to feature a compelling narrative prevents it from reaching the lofty heights.”
