Although Malayalam filmmaker Alphonse Puthran took the country by storm with back-to-back hits at the beginning of the 2010s, his recent directorial, Gold, starring Prithviraj Sukumaran and Nayanthara in the lead roles, failed to impress viewers and ended up bombing at the box office.

Meanwhile, he announced last month that he was quitting making films for theatres due to self-diagnosed autism. The post that shocked his fans was, however, later deleted by Puthran himself. While elaborating on his decision, the filmmaker recently slammed theatres in the state for destroying the dreams of many writers.

He made the harsh remark in the comment section of one of his Instagram photos, featuring him with old friends from his Chennai days, including filmmaker Karthik Subbaraj, actor Bobby Simha and director-cinematographer M Manikandan.

Responding to a fan’s query about whether he would ever make a feature film again, Puthran noted: “I am yet to decide whether it should be for theatres or not. Aren’t these theatre owners responsible for opening up the theatres for reviewers? Why should I work hard for those people? Have any theatre owners ever promoted my movie? They were the ones who insisted on the date, Onam (for my film’s release). Every film has to be released as per their wish,” he alleged.

“A writer is a thousand times bigger. Even though you identify me as a director and my logo, there is a small writer who sits in a room and writes for all the technicians to work and make cinema. Only then can cinema, film, or a movie be projected. And I should receive proper compensation for the tears spilt down, as well as for all the writers whom you, theatre owners, allowed to be destroyed. So, my tears should slowly fade away, along with the tears of other writers. Then Alphonse Puthran will think, ‘I am not a ‘Superman’ who jumps and makes films. I have health issues to be rectified and sorted, which are pending because of the havoc those idiots created,’ ” he added. When a fan asked when he would do a movie with Mohanlal, Puthran mentioned that he had been ready forever.

When another Instagram user expressed anticipation for a movie from the gang featured in the picture, Puthran responded by noting: “It will be a wonderful treat for the world. Directed by Karthik Subbaraj, cinematography by Manikandan Mathiyazhagan (M), music by Rajesh Murugesan, edited by me, sound by Vishnu Govind and Sree Sankar, produced by Prasath Ramar and Pradeep Palarr, starring Vijay Sethupathi and Bobby Simha, with a suitable lady character for the lead if the story involves love. Otherwise, it might be something exciting like a black-and-white short film. I’m sure if this happens, it will be a great movie.”
