In the run-up to the release of her memoir Worthy, actor Jada Pinkett Smith has made a string of revelations about her relationship with Will Smith. Her often conflicting comments have only brought more attention to the already infamous Hollywood couple, who’d been rumoured to be in an open relationship for years prior to their joint appearance on an episode of Red Table Talk last year. On the show, hosted by Pinkett Smith, they addressed the fallout of his actions at the 2021 Oscars, where he slapped comedian Chris Rock on stage for making a joke at her expense.

But in new statements, she said that she was taken aback more by him referring to her as his ‘wife’ at the Oscars than his act of violence against Rock, which she grasped some time later. She unveiled in an interview with Hoda Kotb that she and Smith have been separated for six years, and that the only reason they haven’t legally divorced is because of a promise they’d made to each other.

But in an even more recent interview with Vanity Fair, she said that the Oscars slap only brought them closer together. “I was like, I’m riding with you. I didn’t come into this place as your wife, but I’m leaving here as your wife because we got a storm we’re going to have to deal with together. I am not gonna leave your side,” she said. In an interview with NBC, however, she said that they are working to ‘heal the relationship’ again. “There’s no finding another great love, and I think that’s the point. It’s like we are in a place now that we are in a deep, healing space. And we are really concentrating on healing the relationship between us. There’s no divorce on paper. We really have been working hard. That’s the whole thing. We are working very hard at bringing our relationship together. Back to a life partnership,” the actor said.

Here’s a rundown of the major highlights of the saga:

  1. 01

    'Living separately since 2016'

In an interview with Hoda Kotb for NBC, Pinkett Smith said that she and Smith had been living separate lives since 2016. “I think by the time we got to 2016, we were just exhausted with trying. I think we were both kind of just still stuck in our fantasy of what we thought the other person should be,” she said.

    'Rock asked me out'

In the People interview, Pinkett Smith revealed that Rock asked her out at a time when it was rumoured that she and Smith were headed for a divorce. “I think every summer all the reports would come out that me and Will were getting a divorce. And this particular summer, Chris, he thought that we were getting a divorce. So he called me and basically he was like, ‘I’d love to take you out.’ And I was like, ‘What do you mean?’ He was like, ‘Well, aren’t you and Will getting a divorce?’ I was like, ‘No. Chris, those are just rumors.’ He was appalled. And he profusely apologized and that was that," she said.

The Oscars slap brought them closer together

At a Vanity Fair event, Pinkett Smith said that she and Smith are working hard to rebuild their relationship into a life partnership once again, and that the slap incident brought them closer. "I was like, I'm riding with you. I didn't come into this place as your wife, but I'm leaving here as your wife because we got a storm we're going to have to deal with together. I am not gonna leave your side," she said.

'Haven't called each other husband and wife in a long time'

Also in the Kotb interview, Pinkett Smith said that she was taken aback when Smith referred to her as his 'wife' while yelling profanities to Rock at the Oscars. "First of all, I'm really shocked because, mind you, I'm not there. We haven't called each other husband and wife in a long time. I'm like, what is going on right now?" she said.

Smith says her comments 'woke' him up

In an emailed response to The New York Times, Smith said that he was woken up by Pinkett Smith's recent revelations. “When you’ve been with someone for more than half of your life, a sort of emotional blindness sets in, and you can all too easily lose your sensitivity to their hidden nuances and subtle beauties,” he said. Smith also posted a humorous video on Instagram, seemingly in response to the recent revelations, and captioned it, "Notifications off." Pinkett Smith reacted to the video with a couple of laughing emojis.
