WWE has found a new platform on Netflix, and things have never been more different. Cody Rhodes, who was once a mid-card superstar, is currently the WWE champion; the Rock has become the evil incarnate as the ‘final boss’, and to everyone’s surprise and horror, John Cena has turned ‘heel’. All this is happening under the purview of Chief Content Officer Paul Michael Levesque aka Triple H. While things have taken a surprising turn, everyone is impressed by the job Triple H is doing, but there was a time when the WWE superstars had no faith in him.
Back in 2011, The Miz and R-Truth started creating havoc during live shows of WWE. They attacked superstars outside of facilities, interrupted matches and even attacked officials and commentators. During the ‘Hell in a Cell’ pay-per-view, the two superstars were arrested for attacking Cena, the officials and the cameramen. In a fit of rage, Triple H attacked his own talent, taking the fight to both Truth and Miz.
In the following episode of RAW, all superstars, officials and commentators gathered for a meeting with Triple H to protest. Wade Barrett represented the male roster and listed out their ‘legitimate grievances’. Veteran referee Mike Chioda spoke for the officials and Beth Phoenix led the female division. All three camps gave a no confidence vote and walked out following commentator Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler’s exit.
The WWE fans stood in support of their COO while everyone at RAW went on strike. The following week, Triple H addressed the situation and said, “I will wrestle a broomstick for two hours, and that broomstick will give me a better match than half of the people out there on strike. Come hell or high water, I am giving you a show.” Right after that, superstars John Cena, Sheamus and even CM Punk walked to the ring and declared their support for him.
John Cena took digs at his previous bosses – Vince McMahon, Eric Bischoff and Vicky Guerrero and said, “I am not saying that you are my best friend, but you are my boss, and I am staying.” Sheamus recalled when he stepped on Triple H’s toes and faced the consequences, but he also declared his support. The most surprising source of support was CM Punk, who had a reputation for being anti-establishment. Punk took responsibility for his words and how he stirred the pot many times when it comes to controversy in the WWE. “I know I am the last guy you would expect to see in the foxhole with you, but you know what? Here I am,” he said.
The four proceeded to give the audience a match between Sheamus and John Cena, as Triple H played the role of referee and Punk did the commentary. The match continued; Vince McMahon walked out and stopped the fight as he announced that Triple H will no longer be running Monday Night Raw.
Wrestlemania 41 will be held in Las Vegas on 19 and 20 April and will mark John Cena’s last Wrestlemania as he hope to win the WWE championship for a record 17th time.
