Top Hollywood movie trailers you should watch this week

Trailers have a huge responsibility. A bad trailer may ruin an excellent movie and a good trailer may make a bad movie successful. An ideal trailer should reveal just enough to get the excitement up, nothing more. Do these trailers of movies like The Darkest Hour and Father Figures hold up well?

2017 may not have been the ideal year for Hollywood but there is a lot of seemingly good stuff coming. You really should not miss the trailers for these much awaited movies. Trailers have a huge responsibility. A bad trailer may ruin an excellent movie and a good trailer may make a bad movie successful. An ideal trailer should reveal just enough to get the excitement up, nothing more. Do these trailers hold up well?

1. Gotti

In Gotti, John Travolta, known for Pulp Fiction, stars as the New York City mob boss John Gotti who was active primarily in 1980s. Kevin Conolly, known for HBO’s TV series Entourage, directs this film. Travolta somehow gives a Tony Soprano vibe here, what with him trying to juggle his occupation and family life. The film has been in development hell for years, and the trailer is nothing too groundbreaking. But knowing Travolta’s acting skills, he might just pull this off. The film is slated to be released on December 15 this year.

2. Annihilation

Based on the book of the same name by Alex Garland, Annihilation is a science fiction film. This is a teaser trailer so not much has not been revealed. But we do know that Natalie Portman plays a biologist whose husband disappeared in a disaster zone. And she joins an expedition team made up of an anthropologist, a psychologist, and a surveyor apart from her. The trailer hints towards a presence that is not of this world and a portentous music plays in the background. This film is set for a February 23, 2018 release.

3. Father Figures

This Owen Wilson (Midnight in Paris) and Ed Helms (The Hangover series) film looks uproariously funny, if the trailer is any indication. Wilson and Helms play twin brothers on a paternity quest. Basically, their mother reveals she did not who their father was and they go on a quest to find him.

4. The Darkest Hour

Gary Oldman is one of the finest character actors alive today. With the variety of characters he played, from Dracula to James Gordon, it is a surprise he has not got an Oscar yet. In Darkest Hour, he plays Winston Churchill, and nails it. He is completely immersed in the character, and I’m not just talking about his look and makeup, I’m talking about his gestures and voice. John Lithgow recently won an Emmy by playing Churchill in Netflix’s The Crown, and if anybody can better that performance, it is Gary Oldman. The film releases on 22 November this year.

5. Maze Runner: The Death Cure

The Death Cure aims to conclude the Maze Runner trilogy that began with 2014’s Maze Runner. Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) has to choose between saving his friends or saving the world. Wes Ball returns to direct this one too. The movie, also starring Thomas Brodie-Sangster and Kaya Scodelario, will released on January 26 next year.

Which movie among these you are looking forward to?
