Less than a month before the polls, the much-anticipated biographical historical drama The Apprentice, revolving around Trump’s early business career, is set to hit the screens and the film is expected to become a major talking point in the weeks leading up to the election.
On Tuesday, the film’s makers released its official trailer, offering a glimpse into The Apprentice and its depiction of the “three rules” for success. The 88-second trailer starts with Trump (Sebastian Stan) going to meet lawyer Roy Cohn (Jeremy Strong), who gained recognition for his role as Senator Joseph McCarthy’s chief counsel during the Army-McCarthy hearings. As Trump introduces himself, a response comes, “Donald, who?” highlighting the film’s setting at a time when Trump was not yet well-known. When Trump asks Cohn, “How do you always win?” Cohn replies, “There are rules.”
“The first rule is: attack, attack, attack. Rule two: admit nothing, deny everything. Rule three: no matter what happens, you claim victory and never admit defeat. You have to be willing to do anything to anyone to win,” Cohn advises Trump. The trailer presents several scenes that evoke Trump’s real-life persona and his cultivated public image. It concludes with Trump being asked in an interview, “What if you lost your fortune today?” With a smirk, he responds, “Well, then maybe I’ll run for president,” suggesting that the film will be explosive.
Directed by Ali Abbasi and written by Gabriel Sherman, the trailer’s description reads: “A young Donald Trump (Sebastian Stan), eager to make his name as a hungry second son of a wealthy family in 1970s New York, comes under the spell of Roy Cohn (Jeremy Strong), the cutthroat attorney who would help create the Donald Trump we know today. Cohn sees in Trump the perfect protégé—someone with raw ambition, a hunger for success, and a willingness to do whatever it takes to win.”
