Snoop Dogg says he is ‘scared to go to the movies’ after watching Lightyear: ‘They are putting it everywhere’
Rapper Snoop Dogg talks about the film Lightyear, and questions whether kids really need to know about the whole gender spectrum that early in their life.

The Toy Story movie franchise remains one of the most celebrated and successful movie series of all time. The success of the movie gave birth to a spinoff film around the iconic character of Buzz Lightyear, titled Lightyear. The film hardly broke even at the box office, and as it turns out, even the people who went to watch the film didn’t like it, including rapper Snoop Dogg. The legendary performer talked about the film’s messaging and how the inclusion of a same-sex couple in the film took him by surprise.
While making an appearance on the It’s Giving podcast, Snoop talked about how the scene made him feel like a deer caught in the headlights and how he had no idea about how to explain the relationship between the characters of Alisha Hawthorne and her wife, Kiko, to his grandson. He said, “What you see is what you see, and they are putting it everywhere. They’re like, ‘She had a baby with another woman.’ Well, my grandson, in the middle of the movie, is like, ‘Papa Snoop? How does she have a baby with a woman? She’s a woman. I was like, ‘Oh s***, I didn’t come in for this. I just came to watch the movie.'”
He added that the film f***** him up. “I’m like, scared to go to the movies. You all are throwing me in the middle of stuff that I don’t have an answer for. It threw me for a loop. I’m like, ‘What part of the movie was this?’ These are kids. We have to show that at this age? They’re going to ask questions, and I don’t have the answer.”
Before Lightyear was released, there was much debate internally about the inclusion of the kiss scene, and according to a report by Variety, many employees and allies at Pixar had sent a joint statement to Disney to ensure that the scene remained in the film. Actor Chris Evans, who played the character of Buzz, talked about the controversy with Variety and said that it was frustrating that these kinds of discussions were happening in the first place.
He said. “I mean it’s great. It’s great as it is, and you know, I’ve been asked the question a few times. It’s nice, and it’s wonderful; it makes me happy. It’s tough to not be a little frustrated that it even has to be a topic of discussion. That it is this kind of ‘news’. The goal is that we can get to a point where it is the norm and that this doesn’t have to be some uncharted waters, that eventually this is just the way it is. That representation across the board is how we make films. Look, it’s an honour to be a part of something that is taking those steps, but the goal is to look back on this time and just be shocked that it took us this long to get there.”
