Johnny Depp starrer Jeanne du Barry opened the Cannes Film Festival 2023 on Tuesday. The film received a standing ovation. On Wednesday, Depp, who was embroiled in a legal battle with his ex-wife Amber Heard and had earlier said that he felt ‘boycotted by Hollywood’, attended a press conference in Cannes.

The actor was asked if he still felt boycotted by Hollywood and he said, “You’d have to not have a pulse to feel like, ‘No. None of this is happening. It’s a weird joke,'” he said and added, “When you’re asked to resign from a film you’re doing because of something that is merely a bunch of vowels and consonants floating in the air, yes you feel boycotted.” Depp stepped away from the Fantastic Beasts franchise after a UK newspaper called him a “wife beater” and he lost the trial.

Johnny Depp said that he did not feel boycotted anymore because he doesn’t think about Hollywood. “I don’t think about Hollywood. I don’t have much further need for Hollywood myself,” he said. The actor added, “It’s a very strange, funny time where everybody would like to be themselves but they can’t because they must fall in line. You want to live that kind of life, I wish you the best. I’ll be on the other side somewhere.”

After losing the UK trial, Depp won the defamation trial against Amber Heard in the US and she was ordered to pay $10 million in damages.

Jeanne du Barry is being seen as Johnny Depp’s big comeback and speaking about the same, the actor said, “I’ve had my 17th comeback, apparently. I keep wondering about the word comeback. I didn’t go anywhere… Maybe people stopped calling out of whatever their fear was at the time. But I didn’t go nowhere.”
