‘Internet’s garbage losers’: Sydney Sweeney’s co-star Halsey and comedian Matt Rife slam fans for boycotting Americana over denim drama
Sydney Sweeney’s Americana tanked at the box office after her American Eagle ad sparked eugenics backlash. Halsey hit back at fans for boycotting.

Sydney Sweeney’s new film, Americana, bombed at the box office, and a big part of its crash comes from the controversy around her. Earlier this month, the actor caught heavy backlash for fronting an American Eagle jeans campaign accused of pushing eugenics and Nazi propaganda. Now, just a day after Americana’s director spoke about how the film got buried under the zeitgeist, Sweeney’s co-star Halsey has slammed fans for boycotting it. Comedian Matt Rife also took a brutal swing at internet culture.
Halsey slams fans who boycotted Americana
Americana, despite being a small indie film, was hyped as a potential hit owing to its star-studded cast and intriguing storyline. However, the movie tanked on its opening weekend, pulling in only about $500,000 across more than 1,100 theatres. Halsey, who co-stars in the film, took to Instagram Stories saying the project shouldn’t be punished over “denim bulls***” gossip.’ She argued that director Tony Tost delivered a serious piece of work that deserves to be seen, and that real moviegoers should put the craft above tabloid noise. “You should go see this movie, because [director] @tonytost made an exceptional film, in honour of a genre he knows intimately,” she wrote. “Because his work and his vision are greater than the 24 hr gossip tabloid denim bulls**.”*
In her next post, Halsey continued, saying it’s unfair to drag an entire crew over an ad that makes no sense. “I do agree words are important, but I don’t think it’s fair to predatorily rip a hardworking director and his crew for a film that is completely separate from, and unrelated to, a (pretty dumb) advertising take,” she added. Halsey’s defence comes just a day after Tost himself posted a string of social media posts saying movies live beyond the controversies of their release moment, and although he never saw Americana as some major hit, it was frustrating to see the current trend. Having seen his own past work “gobbled up by the zeitgeist,” he’s curious how Americana will be judged once the noise fades.
Comedian Matt Rife also defended Sweeney, slamming the internet as “full of garbage losers”, twisting anything she does. The 29-year-old wrote, “I keep seeing people mad at Sydney Sweeney for noooothing.” He continued, “She’s learning that the internet is full of absolute garbage losers who will twist anything you say into a c*y misinterpretation. People are awful.”**
Meanwhile, Sweeney hasn’t directly addressed the American Eagle fallout, though she opened up about the criticism she received during the launch of her controversial batwater soap. In a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal, Sweeney said, “I think it’s important to have a finger on the pulse of what people are saying, because everything is a conversation with the audience.” She continued, “It was mainly the girls making comments about it, which I thought was really interesting. They all loved the idea of Jacob Elordi’s bathwater.” The Euphoria star, however, remained tight-lipped about her recent American Eagle controversy. The company earlier put out a statement saying, “It’s always been about the jeans. Her jeans. Her story.” They said they’ll keep celebrating people wearing AE in their own way.
