BAFTA 2024 faces backlash for forgetting Matthew Perry in the In Memoriam segment, snubbing Barbie

BAFTA outrages Matthew Perry’s fans

Matthew’s fans, outraged by his exclusion from the 2024 BAFTA, took to their social media handles to express their feelings and critisise the awards.  “Shame on you @BAFTA for not acknowledging @MatthewPerry  #BAFTA2024,” tweeted a user on X. Another user, wrote, “No mention of Matthew Perry in the #BAFTAs memorial?! Bad form @BAFTA.”

Saddened by this ‘absence’ at the awards, another fan tweeted “Only came to make sure I wasn’t the only person saddened at the glaring omission by @BAFTA of #MatthewPerry during the in memorandum tributes! #BAFTA2024. I’m pleased to see it’s not just me!” X user Maggie View, joked, “Tina Turner was mentioned as an actress but Matthew Perry was NOT. #Baftas #BAFTA2024 #BAFTA.”

BAFTA to remember FRIENDS star during TV awards

Taking fan outrage into account, BAFTA spokesperson gave a statement to People magazine, “I can confirm Matthew Perry will be remembered in our forthcoming BAFTA Television Awards.”The official handle of the awards also wrote on X while sharing the link of the People article, “Matthew Perry will be remembered in this year’s TV Awards ceremony”.

Barbie cast leaves empty handed

As Oppenheimer swept away all major awards, Barbie, one of the biggest blockbusters of last year, was nominated for Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Best Original Screenplay along with a few other design awards, but the award ceremony, held on Sunday, ensured that the makers and the cast of the Greta Gerwig directorial walked home empty-handed. In fact, Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon lost all nine of its nominations while Maestro was snubbed too despite seven nominations.

Barbie actress Margot Robbie  lost out the BAFTA to Emma Stone who won Leading Actress for her performance in Poor Things.

Looks like BAFTA, this year, has ruffled many feathers by dismissing many talents.  In January, actress Kate Beckinsale expressed her frustration online after learning BAFTA couldn’t guarantee if her stepfather, director Roy Battersby, would be included in the In Memoriam segment at the awards ceremony following his death. The academy subsequently assured that Roy will be honoured during their upcoming television awards.
