Bullet train project in South India: The government is rapidly advancing work on the expansion of the bullet train network in the country. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Friday announced that a survey for the bullet train project in South India has been ordered.

Naidu said the proposed bullet train network will connect four cities in South India. These are: Hyderabad, Chennai, Amaravati, and Bengaluru. “Very soon bullet train is going to come to South India. That is going to happen. Survey has been ordered.

From Hyderabad, Chennai, Amaravati, Bangalore, all four cities, more than five crore population and the biggest market in the world,” he said while addressing the ‘India Food Manufacturing Summit’ at Visakhapatnam, reports PTI.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi travelled to Sendai from Tokyo in a bullet train. He was accompanied by his Japanese counterpart Shigeru Ishiba. The Prime Minister landed in Tokyo on Friday on a two-day visit.

On Friday, in an interview with the Japanese daily The Yomiuri Shimbun, PM Modi stated that the government has unveiled an ambition to expand the high-speed rail network in the country.

““While the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project is on its way, we have unveiled a bigger ambition: to have a 7,000-kilometer-long network of high-speed rail in our country,” he told The Yomiuri Shimbun.

The Prime Minister added that the government aims to commence passenger operations on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train corridor within the next few years.

“The Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project is a flagship project between India and Japan. We are aiming to have the passenger services start in a few years’ time,” PM Modi told The Yomiuri Shimbun.

Possible Bullet Train Routes in India

Previously, the National Rail Plan mentioned the following routes for possible development of high speed rail network:

  • Delhi – Varanasi
  • Delhi – Ahmedabad
  • Mumbai – Nagpur
  • Mumbai – Hyderabad
  • Chennai – Mysore
  • Delhi – Amritsar
  • Varanasi – Howrah
