Stree 2, Kalki 2898 AD top list of most searched movies on Google in 2024; Heeramandi leads show searches

The latest edition of Google's "Year in Search" report is out and interestingly, the top 10 trending movie searches in India featured a mix of languages, including Hindi, Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam.

As 2024 draws to a close in just three weeks, it’s no exaggeration to say that the year has been full of shocks and surprises for the film industry. While some smaller projects that arrived with little fanfare became major blockbusters, certain big-budget films, initially expected to be industry hits, failed miserably, upending conventional expectations. Even as Bollywood, the country’s largest film industry, struggled to stay afloat for much of the year, the significantly smaller Malayalam industry enjoyed success with several blockbusters, even producing an industry hit.

At the same time, this year also saw the industry leaving no stone unturned in maximising publicity for its projects, resulting in a surge of searches on Google. The latest edition of the “Year in Search” report from the tech giant highlights what captured the attention of Indians in 2024 and interestingly, the top 10 trending movie searches in India featured a mix of languages, including Hindi, Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam.

While director Amar Kaushik’s horror comedy Stree 2, starring Rajkummar Rao and Shraddha Kapoor, topped the movie search list, Nag Ashwin’s epic science-fiction actioner Kalki 2898 AD, featuring Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Haasan, ranked second. Interestingly, Stree 2 had emerged as the second highest-grossing Indian film and the highest-grossing Hindi film of 2024; and Kalki 2898 AD had become the highest-grossing Indian film of 2024 and the third highest-grossing Telugu film of all time upon release.

In the shows category, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Netflix series Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar claimed the top spot, followed by Karan Anshuman and Puneet Krishna’s Amazon Prime Video series Mirzapur at number two. Surprisingly, the American post-apocalyptic series The Last of Us, starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, captured the attention of a significant Indian audience, securing the third spot in the country’s most searched shows of 2024. Apparently, South Korean series Queen of Tears and Marry My Husband also found quite a few fans in the country.
