‘Shani’ not a cruel and unforgiving ‘graha’: Shiv Sagar

Mahima Shani Dev Ki,a show which showcases the fair and balanced side of the God,is headed for its 175th episode.

The objective of ‘Mahima Shanidev Ki’,the mythological soap on Imagine TV is to dispel the general impression that Shani is a cruel and unforgiving ‘graha’,says the show’s creative producer Shiv Sagar.

Shiv, grandson of late filmmaker Ramanand Sagar, said the show which began three years ago is heading for its 175th episode at the end of this month. “The primary reason for success of the soap is the positive content of the stories told in the episodes. Our objective was to dispel the general impression that Shani is a cruel and unforgiving graha,” he said.

According to Shiv,Shani is a fair and balanced dispenser of justice who cleansed man’s life of bad deeds of the previous and present karmas and sowed seeds of goodness, humility and honesty in his heart during his passage in the destiny of a man.

The serial had started with the stories of King Vikramaditya of Ujjain who went through the seven and half years’ acid test of Shani which changed him from an arrogant king to a humble man and went on to narrate stories revolving around the shrine of Shani in Shingnapur in Maharashtra.

The stories are now converged on the mythology of Shani who altered the life of practically every proud and boastful character in Indian mythology like Ravan,Kans,Duryodhan and Dushyant who believed they were invincible,Shiv said.

Actor Daya Shankar Pandey, who played important character roles in films like ‘Lagaan’ and ‘Swades’,essays the character of ‘Shani’ in the show.

He said when he was asked to meet Shiv he did not have much hope about bagging the role as he had not done TV till then. “But to my surprise,Shiv took one look at me and said you are my Shani and told his assistants not to audition any one as his search has ended. That was the beginning of my journey in the serial and it was as if Shani wanted me to play him,” he said.
