Sudeep declines Karnataka State Film award for Pailwaan: ‘There are many deserving actors…’

Within a few hours of being announced as the recipient of Karnataka State Film Award for Best Actor for 2019, Kichcha Sudeep respectfully declined the honour for personal reasons.

Recently, the jury of the Karnataka State Film Awards announced the winners for the year 2019. Kichcha Sudeep was honoured with Karnataka State Film Award for Best Actor for his role in the well-received sports drama, Pailwaan. However, Sudeep, who won his first Karnataka State Film Award for Best Actor for the 2002 film Nandhi, has declined the prestigious honour.

Sudeep wrote a long note on social media to express his gratitude to each member of the jury for their consideration, and the government of Karnataka, and also expressed the reasons behind his decision to let go of this honour. He wrote, “I must express that I have chosen to stop receiving awards for several years now, a decision made for various personal reasons that I intend to uphold.”

The Max actor also extended his recognition of the talent pool in Karnataka, and said, “There are many deserving actors who have poured their hearts into their craft and would appreciate this prestigious recognition far more than I would. It will only make me happier to see one of them receiving it. My dedication to entertaining people has always been without the expectation of awards, and this acknowledgement from the jury alone serves as a significant boost for me to continue striving for excellence”.

While remaining steadfast about his decision, Sudeep also apologised to the jury and the state government for his personal decision. “This recognition is, in itself, my reward. I sincerely apologise to the jury members and the state government for any disappointment my decision may cause, and I trust you will respect my choice and support me on the path I have chosen. Once again, I thank the honourable members of the jury and the state government for recognising my work and considering me for this award.”

The Karnataka State Film awards for 2019 is being announced now because of a five-year delay due to the pandemic. Some of the winners announced for 2019, include Anupama Gowda (Best Actress), V Harikrishna (Best Music), Raghu Dixit (Best Singer-Male), Krishna (Best Screenplay), P Seshadri (Best Film – Mohandas), Nagathihalli Chandrasekhar (Best Popular Film – India vs England), GS Bhaskar (Best Cinematography), Anusha Krishna (Best Supporting Actress), Tabla Nani (Best Supporting Actor), and Jayadevi Jangamashetty (Best Singer-Female).

On the movie front, Sudeep is on a high after the blockbuster success of his Christmas release, Max, and has an interesting lineup of films, including Anup Bhandari’s Billa Ranga Basha.
