I have not achieved anything,I am still learning: Dev Anand

“I think I am still growing and learning. I have not achieved anything and I am not boasting because I feel there is so much to be done. I don’t delve into past. What is done is done. You have to move ahead in life,” the actor said.

Anand whose production house ‘Navketan’ recently completed 60 years,has no place for a pause in his life as he wants to continue making cinema,which is better than his earlier work.

He is currently working on his next project ‘Chargesheet’ which marks the Bollywood debut of politician Amar Singh.

“My ‘chargsheet’ is ready for release. It is my latest story as a director,as a star. Meanwhile,I already have my next script ready,” says the actor-filmmaker,who will be seen playing a senior police officer in the movie.

“It is not old,it is not a remake but it is born out of a fresh idea. I am a maker and I think my biggest achievement is that I am nobody’s employee. If I want to make a film I don’t need anyone’s permission,” says the actor,who has won the Dada Saheb Phalke award and the Padma Vibhushan among countless other accolades.

Dev Anand is also planning to release the colour version of his 1961 hit ‘Hum Dono’,which starred him in a double role alongside yesteryears’ actress Sadhna and Nanda.

And his life continues to imitate ‘Hum Dono’s eternal song ‘Mein Zindagi Ka Saath Nibhata Chala Gaya’,as the actor continues churn out movies at his age. Taking a break is the last thing on his mind.

“There is no burden in my life. I am very easygoing. I have been doing cinema for 60 years. I did not join politics,did not sell a product. I was in films,I am in films and I will be in films. It’s my life. I have my own growth as a person,who is constantly on the move,” the actor declares.

He may have stayed away from politics but that does not mean that he has shut himself away from what is happening in the world because that’s where his stories come from.

“I am very much aware about what’s happening in the world,socially,politically,economically. I am a filmmaker and a writer. You can not be making films without knowing what’s happening in the world,without being educated. Even duds can make a film but they can not give a good script.

“I read,I delve into people’s mind. I look behind and learn from my mistakes so that I can make new mistakes next time. That’s how I learn,” he says.

The veteran has his own formula for making good movies.

“The spine of cinema is emotion. Director’s job is only to organise a good script because audience is very simple,it is very childlike. You say something that touches their heart and they will take it and that’s what you should drive at. Don’t be very complicated,” Anand says in his advice to young filmmakers.

The eternal optimist that he is,the actor says that he likes to be “swayed at this stage of my career” with good films. He is happy with the variety of the talent in the film industry.

“TV may have created overexposure but it has given us young talent. They see the stars and go home and stand before a mirror and tell themselves that they want to be the next star. It is a good thing today,” he adds.

The actor,who ruled the audience’s heart as a “romantic hero” for almost three decades and later as a filmmaker,is still very much the epitome of the suave gentleman,who continues to charm his fans with his style and enthusiasm as he begins on the next chapter of his life.
