Gibson proud of political impact of ‘Braveheart’

Hollywood star Mel Gibson has claimed that his 1995 movie 'Braveheart' stimulated political change.

Hollywood star Mel Gibson has claimed that his 1995 movie ‘Braveheart’ stimulated political change and paved the way for an independent Scotland.

The UK government handed autonomy to the country in 1998,forming the Scottish Parliament and allowing the Scots to handle their own affairs on matters including education, environment and health care.

The 53-year-old actor is convinced that ‘Braveheart’ which was released two years before a referendum in the country on the subject of devolution, helped Scotland’s quest for independence, reported Daily Express.

“I became really aware of what a piece of art could do to change things. Scotland had received partial autonomy, but I think the film started the ball rolling on some stuff,” said Gibson.

The Oscar-winning film, produced and directed by Gibson,is a Scottish folk tale, depicting the story of the character William Wallace.

“On the way to the premiere in Scotland the crowd was 50-deep and I couldn’t believe there was so much feeling and fervor about the subject. It hit a chord, definitely,” Gibson added.
